Eliezer thinks leaving his town is a good thing #1

"People thought this was a good thing, we would no longer have to look at all those hostile faces, endure those hate-filled stares, no more fear no more anguish, we would live among Jews, among brothers." (Wiesel pg.12 #2)

Eliezer along with many other jews made leaving the town into a good thing as they will not be having to deal with all the hateful people and they will be able to live among all the Jews and unite.

This event is significant to the book because it shows how the Jews were feeling about leaving their town. Although Eliezer was feeling nervous about having to leave his home to go to a place he didn't have a clue about he made the situation a good thing. That was before he knew what would end up happening to him and his family and how his life would never be the same again.

Eliezer's crazy experience with Mrs Schachter #2

" Mrs Schachter had lost her mind, on the first day of the journey she had already begun to moan"(Wiesel pg.24 #6)

Eliezer had gotten put on the same train as a woman, Mrs Schachter and her family got put on different trains, after hours of being in the train Mrs Schachter had started to lose her mind due to the fact that she could no longer be with her family, she started screaming and sobbing and becoming hysterical.

This moment is significant because it explained how the train rides went like for Eliezer and the Jews, and how everyone thought that Mrs Schachter was hallucinating when in reality she was just trying to signal the fire she had seen. This is important because it gives an example of the tough journey that Eliezer along with the Jews went through.

Eliezer finds out about the crematoriums #3

"I told him that I could not believe that human beings were being burned in our times, the world would never tolerate such crimes "the world? The world is not interested in us, today everything is possible even the crematoria". (Wiesel pg.33 #2)

Eliezer and the Jews were being put on two different sides of the road, Eliezer had then spotted burning flames and soon realized there were small children being thrown into the flames.

This moment is significant because it terrified Eliezer when he realized that there were children and adults being thrown into the flames, and how if he were to be in the wrong side of the line he wouldn't want to happen what he saw to him. This is important because it explains the moment Eliezer realized that the world is cruel because he thought that the world would never let such things happen to people.

Eliezer almost gets his crown removed #4

"A few days after my visit, the dentist's office was shut down, he had been thrown into prison and was about to be hanged, it appeared that he had been dealing in the prisoners gold teeth for his own benefit". (Wiesel pg.52 #7)

Eliezer got told to go to the dentist to get his golden crown removed, Eliezer pretended to be sick to avoid the visit and by the time he came back the dentist got sent to prison for using the prisoners gold crowns for his own use.

This moment in Eliezer's life is significant to the collective good because the dentist was using the prisoners'golden crowns for his own good, and in return the dentist office got shut down. It shows that it was a good thing that Eliezer pretended to be sick or else he would've gotten his crown removed and perhaps wouldn't be able to eat his soup and bread, this is a good example for why you shouldn't take advantage for else there will be consequences.

Eliezer no longer accepted God's silence #5

"I did not fast, first of all to please my father who had forbidden me to do so and then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast, I no longer accepted God's silence, as I swallowed my ration of soup. I turned that act into a symbol or rebellion of protest against him" (Wiesel pg.69 #4)

It was the start of Atonement and Eliezer had been fasting every year, however this year had been different because Eliezer had chosen to not fast because she had started losing his faith in his god and because he was told not to.

This is significant to the struggle in Eliezer's religion and family obligations because after all the trouble and the bad things happening to Eliezer and his family he realized that he was struggling with his faith because of everything that was going on. Eliezer's father had forbidden him from fasting because the prisoners didn't get much to eat and him fasting would make him go hungry for long periods of time, this is important because it shows how Eliezer's father was trying to help Eliezer despite their religion.

Eliezer gets thrown and crushes Juliek #6

"My father and I were thrown to the ground by this rolling tide, from beneath me came a desperate cry, "You're crushing me have mercy" the voice was familiar the same faint voice, the same cry I had heard somewhere before" (Wiesel pg.93 #2)

While the Kapos were settling the Jews into the barracks the prisoners were pushing and tripping over each other and Eliezer had found himself on top of Juliek, and found it hard to move due to the fact that there was other bodies on top of him.

This moment is significant to individual survival because if Eliezer had not gotten up, him along with other prisoners would have gotten more hurt because it was getting hard to breathe. This is important because it shows the sympathy that Eliezer had for this boy, Juliek because although Eliezer was also trapped and was starting to give up he still got up because he didn't want to feel the guilt of Juliek having difficulty breathing and feeling pain so he got himself up.

This is important because it shows the sacrifice that Eliezer did for his dad while being told to just leave him alone.

"I woke up at dawn on January 29, on my father's cot there lay another sick person, no prayers were said over his tomb, no candle lit in his memory, his last word had been my name, he had called out to me and I had not answered" (Wiesel pg.112 #4)

When Eliezer had woken up he saw his father in his cot and he was going to be taken to the crematorium, Eliezer had to now grief the pain of his father's passing.

This is significant to family loyalty because it shows what happened after Eliezer's fathers death and how he didn't get any prayers or candles and instead Eliezer just had to move on with the pain of his fathers passing with no memory for his life. This is important because it shows that in the holocaust the Jews that died didn't get any celebration for their lives and instead they just moved on like nothing happened.

"The resistance movement decided at that point to act, armed men appeared from everywhere, bursts of gunshots, grenades exploding we the children remained flat on the floor of the block, the battle did not last long" (Wiesel pg.115 #3)

While the prisoners were going to be let out suddenly there were loud noises of gunshots and grenades and the children then had to remain flat on the floor to try and not get shot.

This is significant to state sponsored violence because the lives of the Jews would not have been at risk if the holocaust was controlled and have never been a thing, but instead many Jews had to die and go through pain because they were forced to go there. This is important because after all the long years of tormenting and pain the prisoners had gone through they were finally being let free even though many came out very ill and malnourished, and their lives would never be the same again.
