This is the first week for the semester and the first day’s class is about revision of last semester. I spent some time in the weekend to practice the verb conjugation as I find myself weak in this area. I found two websites helpful. One is https://conjugator.reverso.net/conjugation-german.html from which I can check most of the verb conjugations. It not only has indikativ forms for different tense, but also partizip perfekt and Partizip Präsens as well. I made notes for sein, geben, machen, können and haben. All the information can be printed and easy to check when needed. Another website is https://german.net/exercises/verbs/sein/ from which I can find lots of exercises and practice my knowledge. I tried the conjugation of the verb sein and haben without referring to notes. The outcome was satisfying.

In this week’s class I came across the separable verbs in German. I found it interesting as there’s no equal gramma in English, so I made it my ISR for this week. During the class I realize the separable verbs always have their syllable in the first part, like hochfahren. But it is not always so useful during learning, so I check the connecting information online and found this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEizjiqBrbI. The separable verbs are usually made by a per preposition prefix and a verb that has it own meaning. Like Fahren and abfahren. The video just gave some examples and I found this website https://deutsch.lingolia.com/en/grammar/verbs/separable-verbs afterwards. The usual prefix are shown on this website and took down some useful notes.

I learnt Imperativ sentence this week and I used about half an hour to review this gramma as I found it not difficult during class. I organized notes on relevant knowledge points and found this video helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0aJdvJfG-0. From the video I learnt the special imperative forms for some verbs like haben and werden. I would put my notes on the padlet.
I do wish every gramma point can be easy as Imperativ!

I learnt several prepositions in German in this semester as well as the accusative and dative form like zum, beim, dem and vom. The accusative form added difficulties in learning them so I spent some time to organize the notes and do the exercise on https://german.net/exercises/prepositions/. I like this website because it has very detailed classifications of exercises under the preposition category. I tried the exercise of dative prepositions. Since the answer is to be chosen from different choices the result of my exercise was good. I will try the one with accusative the day after.

When I tried the exercise for dative and accusative prepositions, I found myself stuck in the middle. The process was too slow as I need to look for my notes for most of the questions. To improve my ability I tried to find some related videos about this and I found this onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnNGCS5tVMw. Form the video I realized there are two things to determine whether do I need an accusative form. One is the verbs and the other is the prepositions. The video of accusative is in six parts and though the purpose is somehow depart from my original desire, I watched them all to enhance my gramma. The sixth videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2ZC8y3763U is the exercise of accusative and I think it is useful. I made a small note which has the most widely used accusative vocab and stick it on the side of my computer to remind me changing words when writing in German.

Because of the strike and the covid-19 I stayed at home for several days. The inside lifestyle killed my enthusiasm to learn new knowledge, especially gramma. So, I searched for some comedies (Komödie) in German to learn in laugh. The most interesting one I found was on Weibo. It is the Chinese social networking sites like twitter( https://m.weibo.cn/status/4424699473803960?). This comedy talks about the different views about vegetarian and the extreme expressions used are very interesting. There are both Chinese and German subtitles and that is very friendly to me. I can understand the meaning and practice my listening at the same time. Because it shows the conflict during dinner time, I can review the vocab about food that I learnt last semester as well. It is hard to find the show with both Chinese and German subtitle. The sentence they used in the show has some difference with the one I learnt from books.

The exercise on https://german.net/exercises/sentences/ remind me that it is important to know how to form a complete sentence to communicate with others. I first tried the exercise for asking questions. As the answer of the questions are given, the exercise is not difficult. But the answer of the exercise remind me that accusative changing is also valid here (like wem). I also learnt new question verbs: Warum, which means why; Welche, which means which one. I also did the exercise for answer. These videos are helpful with structure forming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI4lOt4riXs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMlb2DwFYxY. The S-V-O form and T-M-P form are explained in these videos.

I always feel that learning German in English is difficult, and that was the main reason that cause me to hesitate to sign up for the course last semester. Since I went back to China, it is a great chance foe me to buy some textbooks about German in Chinese. It makes me feels really comfortable to learn German in my native language. The two books I bought are Grundwortschatzes für Anfänger and Kurs für Neues Deutsch ABC. The first one is for vocabulary and the second is for basic knowledge for German. I read the first four Lektion of the second book (Name und Land, Person und Familie, Berufe and Einkauf) and did the exercise behind. I took the advice of other Chinese German learner to buy these books and I recommend them to other Chinese students too. In the exam I did last semester I wrote many English languages in the writing exam. I can’t help myself speaking English or writing English when doing German work. I think it is the reason of language system switching. When I speak German, the subconscious tells me I am doing foreign language practice and as a foreign language I have learnt for ten years, English came out naturally. I hope study German in Chinese can help me depart the German and English system in my brain.
