The Athenian democracy can hardly be called a democracy because of all the strict limits on who could participate. Democracy is based on the idea that all people should be able to have a say in their government, but in Athens, this only applied to men, so women, as well as slaves and former slaves were not represented at all.

It's not true that the people had no say in their leadership, the men in Sparta over 30 were able to vote on their oligarchs and who they wanted to represent, and while this demographic is small and not representative of the whole society, the same could be said of the people who were allowed to vote in Athens. Also, direct democracies have a lot of room for flaws. Having regular people vote on laws is not always a good idea, because a lot of times people are stupid and do not really understand what is best for the society as a whole, so it is good to have a small group of competent individuals vote on issues rather than everyone who may or may not have any idea of what they are doing.

I would also argue that Spartan society valued women more. They were not only seen as keepers of the house, but as mothers of warriors too. They were important. And while they still do not have anything close to equal opportunity they were still able to train to be physically and mentally strong and they were seen as important in society, or at least more than they were in Athens.

Men over 30 get to vote...on what? Which war to fight in next? Your city-state may be secure, but for what purpose? I mean, what are you even living for without ANY luxuries in life. Also, how many men made it to 30 anyway after their 20-plus years of military service probably meant most were dead by then.
