The Statue of Liberty is located in New York, in the New York Bay. What a lot of people do not know is that the original name of the statue is ‘Liberty Enlightening the World’. The statue is a symbol for, obviously, freedom which is one of the core values of the United States. Moreover does the statue applies for a warm welcome to everyone: returning Americans, guests and immigrants. 

 

The statue is 46 metres high and is a present of France. The reason for this present is the centenary of the declaration of independence but also as a sign of friendship. The Statue of Liberty represents Libertas which is the Roman goddess of freedom. On the plaque of the left hand of the statue is written ‘JULY IV MDCCLXXVI’, which is the date of the declaration in Roman numerals. On the pedestal of the statue is placed the sonnet ‘The new Colussus’, with the famous line ‘Give me your tired, your poor’ who would express the American hospitality. The crown of the statue has seven spikes which represents the seven oceans and seven continents of the world, indicting the universal concept of liberty.

 

There was a lot of euphoria in every Black community household on November the 4^th of 2008. This was the day that Barack Obama has been chosen as president. That election for a new president was for the Black community not about the Democrat versus Republican, or about Obama’s politics, the fact that a black man became the president of the United States was a big thing. The election of the first Black president had not only a political meaning but also a big social meaning. For the most African Americans Obama’s election is seen as a victory and as a blow against 400 years of Black slavery, legal segregation and institutional racism. 

Barack Obama did not only have a big influence on the Black community in the United States, in 2009 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. The reason for this prize was that Obama was a big promotor of nuclear non-proliferation, which means that he promoted not to spread nuclear weapons. Because he was involved within two wars he had a big influence on this subject. Another main reason for this prize was that he created a ‘new climate’ in international relations which was a real improvement. He was especially reaching out to the Muslim world.  

 

The man on the poster is called Uncle Sam, initials U.S., he is a common personification of the American government or the United States in general and came into use during the War of 1812. The precise origin of the Uncle Sam character is unclear, but the legend around this figure is that the name ‘Uncle Sam’ was based from Samuel Wilson, a meatpacker from New York who supplied rations for American soldiers during the War of 1812. Although story went around from 1812, the first poster of Uncle Sam, the poster I just described, was made during the First World War. The reason for this poster was to recruit new people to work for the U.S. army, which the text written at the bottom of the poster made this very obvious. 

 

The Super Bowl is seen as one of the most important sport events in the United States and is in a lot of states considered as an official holiday. This match was a lot of times the best viewed program of the year on the American television and belongs with more than a hundred million viewers to the best viewed sport events of the world. 

The American Football match is not only famous because of the sport and the fact that this is a final, but also because of the halftime show that is given every Super Bowl. Halftime shows are a tradition during American football games at all levels of competition, and especially during the Super Bowl this performance is a big happening. The game represents a fundamental link to pop culture, which helps to enlarge the amount of viewers via television and to attract the interest of viewers worldwide. 

 

Also the U.S. national anthem is an important of the American culture and therefore also at the Super Bowl. The anthem has been performed since the beginning of the Super Bowl and since 1982 the anthem is performed by a famous singer or group.
