Many studies have shown that when animals search for food in groups, they are more effective. This is particularly true if food supplies are concentrated in just a few locations. If more people participate in the hunt, there's a better chance that one of them will locate the food clump. Foraging in a group can make it easier to catch prey in certain situations. Dolphins have been observed surrounding a school of fish and darting into the middle to eat the fish caught in the middle. When attempting to catch large prey, several carnivores will band together. When hunting moose, for example, wolves will hunt together, and lions will hunt together when hunting big prey like wildebeests. When hunting much smaller prey, these animals will sometimes hunt alone. Many animals live in social groups for a variety of reasons, including defense. While a single baboon can be unable to repel a leopard, a group of baboons will often do so. Furthermore, with more people working together, others will act as sentinels, keeping an eye out for risk while the rest of the group eats or sleeps. Prairie dogs and large flocks of crows usually have several individuals serving as sentinels, making sneaking up on a prairie dog town or a flock of crows virtually impossible. Many prey animals, including schools of fish and flocks of shorebirds, migrate in groups with highly organized movements. The entire group runs rapidly, darting from one direction to the next as though they were all physically bound. The predator is thought to be confused by this action. In most cases, predators must single out one person in a group to concentrate on and attempt to catch. A predator's ability to concentrate on a single person is thought to be hampered by a rapidly moving and turning school of fish, flock of birds, or herd of antelope.
