I chose an episode of "Elmo's World" about doctors. The video is slightly lengthy but in short, it described the importance of getting checkups and receiving vaccines to maintain overall health. This reflects on our studies in the semester about primary prevention to receive checkups and vaccines before getting sick. I thought it was a cute and effective way to reach out to children and parents on the subject matter.

I chose this because whenever I think of epidemiology I think of disease breakouts and how one sick person can get so many other people sick. The pyramid starts with one person and each layer there is more and more people added. If we as epidemiologist do not crack the code then this pyramid keeps growing.

When I think of epidemiology, I am reminded of how quickly disease can spread. I chose to include this image provided by the CDC on the estimation of partners one has been exposed to, based on the number of partners an individual has. This image is shocking, as most do not expect to be exposed to this many people. While this is only one example, I find that it effectively illustrates how simple it is for an outbreak to occur. We are exposed to illness and disease much more frequently than expected. Keeping this in mind, educating the public on prevention and treatment of disease is crucial in keeping our society healthy.

When I think of epidemiology, I think of illness, looking for patterns and correlations in diseases to help find the cause. Epidemiology helps society find factors that help’s attribute to specific diseases. I chose this image because this is taking a particular population and identifying the ill members. Being able to identify the affected members of society can help find the cause. Different forms of studies have been used to look at correlations. Throughout this course, we have taken articles and looked at the exposures, outcome, and the studies used. One way of finding vulnerabilities consists of examining ill individuals and their past exposures; we are then able to come up with possible causes.

The reason why I chose this image was because when I hear the word Epidemiology, I immediately think of all the disease, cancer, and possible outbreak that will occur in the near future. As an epidemiologist, this individual must look for facts and evidence to find out what is causing this outbreak or illness to occur. They are like detectives in a lab coat, that are trying to solve a crimes scene and must gain knowledge to stop the disease from spreading (prevention). In epidemiology, there are so many factors that influence how these disease will continue to grow and gathering data and more knowledge about them is a key role in epidemiology.

This picture reminds me of epidemiology because during one of the first few lectures, Dr. Lee mentioned the iceberg concept of disease in which there may be much more to a disease then just the surface. The women in the picture seems as if she's a little afraid to open the door to the next room which can represent her fear for knowing that there may be something wrong with her body. The image in her body reminds me of the iceberg concept as although the tree itself is not dead -its just lost its leaves (which the leaves can represent early symptoms) there is so much more under the water that may be slowly killing the tree (which the tree can represent her health).

The pictures teach children how to have good hygiene and basic ways to stay healthy. I think it is really important to have a healthy country by starting with the children. Epidemiology is all about studying and learning about patterns and causes of disease and infection, and this image does a great job of explaining to a child how to do little everyday things that could drastically prevent disease and infection.

This image shows the percent decrease in specific diseases after the presence of a vaccine for it. One key aspect of prevention are vaccines. I believe that vaccines are a great advancement in medicine because it can potentially protect people from disease and illness. I encourage parents (and people in general) to receive vaccines for both themselves and their children. Even if it may seem for something small like the flu, it is vital that people take every precaution they can to prevent sickness.

This picture reminds me of epidemiology because epidemiologists have to study the outbreak of diseases and when an outbreak occurs in a certain area, it doesn't just impact that area, but it may impact the whole world, especially if the disease is contagious. I remember watching an epidemiology movie called "And the Band Played On" and it was about an outbreak of HIV. There were many cases of HIV in different areas, and they ended up finding out that it was because one of the people that had it was an airplane steward and spread it to different parts of the United States. This shows how fast disease can travel and how important epidemiology is in keeping our diseases minimized and contained.

They observe and interview people as well as run tests in order to collect and analyze data. This allows them to look closely and see what exactly the problem is so they can figure out how to treat and prevent it. I believe epidemiologists really look at people under a magnifying lens to really be able to see clearly and figure out what the problem is. Most health problems and diseases aren't usually visible on the surface; you really need look closely to be able to find them.

This displays what I think when I think about epidemiology- it is the study of distribution of diseases or other health-related objectives along with the application of the appropriate study for each problem. The methods that would be used for the health problems may be viewed/studied worldwide. Epidemiologists may study several different populations around the world in order to clearly identify where the source of a particular outbreak is coming from. The use of the magnifying lens in this photo is to further identify, study, and prevent health issues that are being studied in the populations, as health problems are usually not observed by just taking a broad look.

But even though its the basically breakdown of the word it means so much more. Upon. people. study. It seems simple but epidemiology helps people. It is just as important as another health field, it is just as important as nurses and just as important as surgeons. It is a type of study that helps people in the masses. Although individual people are important and saving a life is saving a life but doctors wouldn't have a lot of the information that is use to practice medicine without epidemiology.
