The issue for Science Week is Sustainability - How can science help to protect our Earth? The Secretary General of the United Nations claims we are in trouble because "there is no Planet B"
As Astroscientists, we are going to challenge that claim.

Staying on Earth means we are vulnerable to the 'single point of failure', meaning that if an event like an asteroid impact of something else happens to our planet, we are all taken out at once.
We could also ruin the planet ourselves with climate change or even nuclear war, which would also mean we would ruin the planet for all humans.

Summary

In the future and if NASA receives more funding from the American government, it may become plausible for humans to live elsewhere in the solar system. Technology would have to greatly improve by then and we would have to be able to build ships big enough to carry large amounts of humans, while still being able to launch off the ground, which would be very difficult.

The main considerations if this was to happen would be how we get to the destination, how we produce enough air, food and potable water. We would also have to consider how to construct the places that we would live in and how expensive that would be.
