This is a Review for a Traditional Tale about the book The Legend of the Bluebonnet.

This book was a really good read for people who are from Texas, or maybe even people who aren’t from Texas, describing a tale that was made about how the bluebonnet became a flower. This book is about how this little girl lost her family to “famine” which is scarcity of food. So, the little girl named ‘She-Who-Is-Alone” knew what the great spirits wanted from her, and that was her warrior doll, the only thing she had left to remember her family by. It wore blue feathers like the bird who cries “jay jay jay.” One night she ran to the top of the hill and talked to the great spirits and said please accept my only possession from my family, she lit the fire and threw her doll in it. When she woke up the next morning she was surprised to see blue flowers everywhere that she had thrown the ashes at. This book is interesting in my opinion because she went from the girl who was all alone, to the girl who all of the land loved her. Now they remember the little girl who sacrificed her doll for the beautiful land.

The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. By: Tomie Depaola

This is a Review for a Traditional Tale about the book The legend of the Indian Paintbrush

This book was a lot like the book the legend of the Bluebonnet. It teaches a lot about life. This little boy wasn’t very strong, and he wasn’t like the other boys in his tribe, he wished to be like him. The shaman of the tribe told him he had a special gift, when he got a little older he went to the hills, the sky told him that he will keep this buckskin and one day paint a beautiful picture. He started making his own paint and brushes, and started painting. He one day decided he was going to paint the sunset but couldn’t ever make the right colors, so it looked very dull. But one night he heard something say to him, “Because you have been faithful to the people and true to your gift you shall find the colors you are seeking.” He found the colors and painted the sunset for the people. Every spring the people danced and sang praises of him because of what he had painted for the people. In my opinion this is a great book for children, because it talks about even though he thought he wasn’t good enough like the other boys in his tribe, he had a special gift, and in the end his special gift ended up very well for him. I would read very carefully while reading this book because it has a lot of detail and a lot of beautiful pictures that make the book up.

This is a Book Recommendation for a Poetry book.

I really recommend this book if you want to read poetry to a group of kids! The whole book was so good, and it kept me wanting to keep reading the poems one after another. The cool thing was they weren’t hard to understand. Sometimes poems can be hard to comprehend, but this would really be an easy poetry book to read to young kids. The book was based on Autumn, so you could read it during the fall, and it teaches you everything that happens in the fall. It also talks about what kinds of things you can do in the fall. It begins by telling you when Autumn first starts, and then at the end it tells you when Autumn is over. It talks about how Halloween falls around this time, it also talks about the types of “birds of autumn.” This book would be recommended by me if you were wanting to teach students about a certain season and certain things about that season because this book covers it well! Advice from me on this book is that I would wait until fall so whoever you are reading it to can get a good feel about the season and how what is talked about in the book actually happens during that season.

This is a Book Recommendation for a Previous Bluebonnet Winner.

This book is such a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves strawberry shortcake! What was neat about this book is that when you are reading through it explains things that maybe the child who is listening or who is reading the book wouldn’t understand. It talks about a rooster who wants to make his granny’s strawberry shortcake, so by the help of his friends they all make this strawberry cheesecake. Throughout the book there is a paragraph on certain sides of the page that explains what something is on that page. For example, it tells you on one page what a measuring cup is and what they come in such as 1 cup, ½ cup etc. Then it tells you how to measure dry ingredients and so on. So that is neat, and I would recommend anyone who is maybe teaching their kids how to make a recipe or something that this would be a good read. I really enjoyed this book because they added humor into it, and then at the they gave the recipe of the strawberry shortcake, so you can try it yourself! I definitely recommend this book!

Grandfather's Journey. By: Allen Say

This is a Defining quote for the genre Historical Fiction.

The quote that I choose from this book is at the very end where it says, “I think I know my grandfather now, I miss him very much” The reason that I chose this quote is because it really helps you understand the relationship the grandson had with the grandfather. The grandfather decided he wanted to move away from his homeland and start a new life, but when he did he really missed his home. So he moved back home and ended up missing California, he never had the chance to revisit California before he passed away. The grandson grew up and decided he wanted to visit California and start a family there, he ended up loving it like his grandfather did. Another quote that is significant from this book would be “The funny thing is, the moment I am in one country, I am homesick from the other.” Both of these quotes are really significant from the book because it describes how his grandfather felt, the grandson states that he didn’t really understand his grandfather until he did exactly what his grandfather did and that is why I picked that quote.

This is a Letter to a friend. The genre is a Newberry winner.

Dear Lacy, I just read an awesome book that you would maybe want to read to your kids someday! The book is called Last Stop on Market Street. It’s about this little boy who goes to church with his grandma on Sunday and after church they ride the bus to their stop on market street. This day the little boy named C.J isn’t very happy, he’s wondering why he must do all this stuff that others don’t have to do like wait in the rain for the bus, and wondering why they can’t just have a car. He’s wondering why he can’t have a guitar like the guy that gets on the bus. His Nana helps him find the beautiful in every situation that C.J mentions in the book. She allows him to see the beautiful in the world that others may not see. This is would be such a good book to read to your kids because you can also explain to them that everything can be turned into something beautiful no matter how “dirty” it is! Let me know if you decide to read it and what you think about it! I think it could be a powerful message for you kids!
Love, Laiken.

I really enjoyed it because it tells a story about two mothers. The reason I liked this book is because some people don’t agree with the way they lived their life, but they taught their kids that it is okay to be different. The story is about these two mothers that end up adopting three children. Their house is always full of love. Every time they do an event with the neighborhood there is always this one family who never participates, and that’s because they don’t like the fact that the two women are together. “No matter how many moms or dads they have, they are everything a family is meant to be.” I really like this book because they teach them not to worry about what others think. This story is great and its sad that it is a banned book!

This is a Defining Quote. The Genre is Historical Fiction.

The quote that I chose to use is at the very end of the book. “Someday somebody’s going to come along and knock this old fence down,” Annie said. And I nodded. “yeah” I said. “someday.” This quote really means something to me. This book is about a white family and a black family that has houses next to each other and it is separated by a fence. The black little girl’s mother always told her she couldn’t go to the other side, and so did the white little girls mother. One day, the black little girl had the courage to go up to Annie and talk to her, she was sitting on the fence. So, Clover which is the black girl said my momma said I can’t go to the other side but she didn’t say anything about sitting on it” So they sat on the fence together. I like this specific quote because someday that fence will be torn down because whites and blacks won’t be separated anymore, and the children knew that someday they would be able to play with the people that had different skin color than them.

The genre is Coretta Scott King Award Winner

Dear Dr. Solomon,

I read this book in hopes that you might or have already read it before. This book was truly inspiring to me because it talks about a girl feeling like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. I feel like everyone in their life time feels like that at some point. This book was such a good read because it focuses on this girl who feels nothing to finding her “voice” and feeling everything. That “voice” just happened to be dance, and she danced away her worries and fears. She felt herself. This has a deep connection with me. No matter what your dreams are you always have the power to reach them. I really felt emotion in this book because I feel this was once me, and I think I have found my “voice.” Have you??

Sincerely, Laiken!

This is a Book Recommendation for the genre Graphic Novel. This is my Second Chapter Book.

I recommend this graphic novel to anyone! I really really recommend this to people who love to read about friendships, if you work hard for something you want, and if you want to read about how much harder life gets as you grow up. When reading this book, I recommend that you read carefully, there is ton of information in this book but also kind of an easy read. Just make sure you read left to right and up to down. Since it is kind of comic graphic novel it can get confusing. But I recommend this book! It was such a good read and I loved reading it for a project during this class. I love that it talks about how Astrid is a great friend and sticks to something even whenever it is hard.

This is a Review for a Post Modern Picturebook.

Tuesday is a good postmodern picture book, I feel it is easy to follow. The pictures explain these frogs that start off on flying lily pads. They fly to different places such as, a kitchen window where a man eats a sandwich, they visit someone’s backyard, and they also visit an old lady’s living room, where she sleeps in front of the tv. They then meet a dog, and the dog joins in on their adventure. After the night is over, they return to their pond of their lily pads. But at the very end it shows where a guy is investigating things left by the frogs. Then at on the last page it says, “Next Tuesday” and has pigs flying over a barn. I feel for advice for the reader I would tell them to look at the pages very carefully to understand what is going on.

This is a Review. The genre is Autobiography. This is my Fourth Chapter Book.

This is a book about young Tomie and about his childhood in Meriden, Connecticut. The town is about to experience its first hurricane ever, but Tomie’s family had just started to build themselves a new home across town. After the hurricane hits, Tomie counts down the days he is supposed to move into his new home, he is so excited. In this book Tomie really takes in how helpful and caring the community is when help is needed. Even though the family has up’s and down’s there love for one another still stands strong, even through all the dark roads they go down before getting to move into their new home. I say this is a great read. Since it talks about hardships, but it still focuses on the love that the family has for one another.

This is a Book Recommendation. The Genre is Fantasy. This is my Sixth Chapter Book.

This was such a good read because it talks about fairy’s. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about those kinds of things. I loved this book because its great for ages 6-9 and lets the reader know that they are never to old to believe in fairies. I would recommend reading it to a class if you ever talk about the genre fantasy, because not only is it a good book about that but it’s a kid book so they will enjoy it! I feel it would be more for girls, but you could always choose another book for the boys. I think the girls will especially like it because it talks about three girl fairies. This is why I recommend this book.

This is a review. This is a Newberry Winner. This is my Fifth Chapter Book.
This book is about the day that word got around Denmark that Jews were being sent to death camps. The family of Anne Marie end up harboring her best friend Ellen, and help smuggle her family out of the country. In this book you really come to see the true meaning of bravery. Annemarie retrieves Ellen’s necklace and wears it as an anticipation of Ellen’s homecoming. This is a good read. It shows great form of bravery and how Annemarie is more cautious about life. I’ve learned from this book that fear doesn’t stop Annemarie from being brave, so it shouldn’t for us either. Advice would be to pick out all of the characteristics of this book, because there is a lot and you will really see how the book plays out and how great of a read it is.

This is a Biography. This is a Letter to a Friend.

Dear Kimberlee,

I read this great biography over Alexander Graham Bell. I know you are super interested in Biographies. This was a great Biography. Usually they aren’t my type of book to read but I really enjoyed it. He invented the telephone and was also a teacher for the deaf. So, this book was cool to see about his life. Its cool cause it goes on to talk about the telephone and how he transformed the way people communicate with each other. Its crazy to think that this invention is how we talk to our families and also use the telephone for emergencies… so we really benefit from his invention! So, all in all a super sweet biography that I think you would love. Please let me know if you read it and what you think about it!

Love, Laiken!
