From the ages 25-35 you should put aside 10% of your earnings for retirement and take "'advantage of an employer-sponsored 401(k)" (Personal Finance 11). When you are 35-55 years old and making more money, you should be putting away 10-20% of your earnings. You should also think of getting "stock and bond funds" as well as "implementing a dollar cost averaging strategy to minimize your investment risk" (Personal Finance 11).

When you are about 55 years old and only have about 10 more years to go until retirement, you should be focused on "protecting your assets" rather than "continuing to pursue growth" (Personal Finance 11). This could mean moving assets into fixed-income securities. After retirement it is important to to look at the options you have in taking money from your accounts and "reallocating your investments to provide the income you need and some growth" (Personal Finance 11).

My parents are an awesome example of being smart with money. They make sure to put money aside at each paycheck for retirement and savings. When they were younger they would take their two paychecks, live off the smaller one, and save the larger. My dad works for Microcenter and because of that, he can purchase stock in the company. We get money from that and they make sure to put it away and not spend it on pointless things now.
