This is what exactly what you have to do with this video! This video has a catchy tune, but is also very educational for students to learn some sign language.
Teaching Idea: I would start the lesson by just playing the video once for the class. I would then go over each sign for each of the colors. This way I can go at the speed of the students. I would use this song for a class where we had just learned the colors. I would play this song so they could also know the signs for the colors. This could help the students remember the words along with the signs if they are having difficulty knowing the colors. This would also be a mini-lesson into American Sign Language (ASL) for the students that could continue to build as the year goes on.

She is trying to learn how to communicate with other people, but she is Deaf. How is she able to do this? Read the book to see the different things Anna does to be able to communicate with her family.
Author: Bernard Wolf
Illustrator: Pictures from Mike Levins
Publication Date: 1977
Genre: Nonfiction- Biography
Approximate Interest Level: 2-3
Approximate Text Level:
Grade: 2-3
Guided Reading: Not Available
Lexile Measure: Not Available
DRA: Not Available
Teaching Idea: Before we read the book together, I would have the students think about how they communicate. I would have the students each write down 3 words that come to mind when I say the word communicate to them. I would then have them turn and talk with their partners about what they came up with. We would read the book as a class. I would then ask if they have any other words that have to share on the word communicate.
Other Ideas: http://www.sdcda.org/office/girlsonlytoolkit/toolkit/got-05-communication.pdf

Title: No Ordinary Hero
Teaser: A movie that shows one little boy who is Deaf watch his favorite superhero, Super Deafy, everyday after school. His parents are split on the idea of where he should be placed in school of the Least Restrictive Environment. In the end the boy is in the proper room and Super Deafy gains respect and is well known around the community.
Teaching Idea: I would have the students watch this movie, with the subtitles on because some of the movie is in ASL. In the end we would have a classroom discussion on the movie. We would talk about what the students like/dislike and their overall thoughts on the movie. The movie ends a perfect spot for everyone to write their own ending. I would have the students write their own ending to how they think the movie should end up due the next day. I would then have the student turn and talk with partners the next day to talk about how they thought it ended.

However, he starts to lose his hearing and is kicked out of the band. He eventually is able to continue with his love for music, but how? The first lesson would just be a discussion on what the students think about Lee getting kicked out of the band. The next lesson would be a music lesson in the classroom to get the students interacting with each other. There would be recorder, tambourines, harmonicas, triangles, and other instruments that the students would produce music with.
Other Ideas: http://lessonplanspage.com/music/kindergarten/

Title: What Is It Like To Be Deaf? By: Dianne Kinnee
Teaser: If someone always asked what is is like to be this or that how would you respond? Ms. Dianne Kinnee answer what is it like to be Deaf in a poem. At first it is a simple answer, but she realizes that there is so much more than that to it. In the end everyone wants to be alike and belong.
Teaching Idea: I would have the students read this poem individually. As a class we would then come together to discuss it. We would talk about their thoughts and reactions to it. I would have the students each create their own poem about a characteristic that is unique to them and follow the format of the poem we just read. I would then have the students share with a partner their poem and we would hang them around the room for people to see.
