Barriers:

1) Students working with smartphones and extra screen within arms reach.

2) FOMO, students fear missing out on social interactions (gatherings, group chats) making it more difficult for students to remove devices.

3) Multitask myth - false belief that students can multitask but this results in cognitive overload.

4) Environmental distractions( noisy surroundings, uncomfortable settings, cluttered spaces).

Hypothesis:

If students struggle with external distractions from their surroundings, implementing choice architecture, such as removing smartphones and extra screens from their immediate workspace, will reduce internal distractibility. Individuals who keep their smartphones and extra screens within arm’s reach while working are more susceptible to present bias, prioritizing immediate gratification. The salience effect, minimizing the visibility of distractions will make them less tempting, decreasing impulsive engagement. Additionally, increasing friction, such as requiring extra steps to access social media (such as placing apps behind a password or keeping phones in another room), will nudge students toward sustained concentration and higher productivity.

Link:

How to effectively nudge for sustainable behaviors on college campuses.pdf
