Throughout this stage the child develops the sense that the world is a safe and people are reliable and trust worthy.
I resolved this crisis through developing trust because I was loved and well cared for by my parents and other family members.
The textbook states, "The critical element in developing trust is sensitive, responsive, consistent caregiving." (Martorell). This quote provides evidence that the loving parenting I was given allowed me to develop trust.

This stage of development occurs in toddlers (12-18 months to 3 years). Throughout this stage children begin to explore their environment and develop the feelings of independence and a positive self-esteem.
I resolved this crisis through developing autonomy. I began to be encouraged to be more independent through actions like walking, feeding myself, and dressing myself. I was praised or encouraged when these actions were completed and this allowed me to have positive self-esteem and a sense of independence.
The textbook states, "Caregivers who view children’s expressions of self-will as a normal, healthy striving for independence and not as stubbornness can help them learn self-control, contribute to their sense of competence, and avoid excessive conflict." (Martorell). My parents allowed me to express my feelings of wanting to be independent and did not punish me for doing things independently. This allowed me to develop autonomy instead of shame and doubt.

Initiative vs. Guilt

This stage of development occurs from ages 3 to 6. Throughout this stage children begin to develop a sense of purpose by taking on responsibility as well as beginning to feel guilt for misbehaviors.
I resolved this crisis by developing the initiative to do new things despite the fact that I may not do it correctly. My parents allowed me to see that it is okay to mess up and that growth happens in those moments. For example when trying to learn how to ride a bike, I would fall over and then be encouraged to get back up and try again without being punished.
The textbook states, " Children who learn how to regulate these opposing drives develop the virtue of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear of punishment." (Martorell). This statement gives me evidence that I found my purpose and ability to pursue goals because I was encouraged to keep trying despite failure.

This stage of development occurs around the ages of 6 to 13. Throughout this stage children begin to work successfully with others and gains a view of how others see them. The child begins to feel competency.
I resolved this crisis through developing a sense of industry. I made a large transition in my life at the age of 12 going from being homeschooled to the public school environment. I began to gain the sense of industry after successfully building positive friendships and relationships. I also began to successfully complete school assignments that boosted my competence.
The textbook states, "If the stage is successfully resolved, children develop a view of themselves as being able to master skills and complete tasks." (Martorell). I believe that I successfully resolved this stage by having the feeling of mastering the skills provided to me throughout the school transition and successfully completing the tasks.

Identity vs. Identity confusion

This stage occurs within the ages of puberty to young adulthood. Throughout this stage adolescents begin to have a sense of their identity and self image.
I resolved this crisis through developing a sense of self. I believe this stage was one of the most challenging and memorable times in my life. I began to become the individual I wanted to be and develop based off of my own morals, experiences, and surroundings. Through experiencing many different society roles I developed my identity.
The textbook states, "Adolescents who resolve the identity crisis satisfactorily develop the virtue of fidelity: sustained loyalty, faith, or a sense of belonging to a loved one or to friends and companions." (Martorell). This statement provides evidence that I have resolved this stage of development through having an understanding of my identity. I am happy with the people I surround myself with, habits I make for myself, and the choices I am making to become the best version of myself.

Intimacy vs. Isolation

This stage of development occurs during young adulthood. Throughout this stage of development young adults seek to make commitments and form long-term relationships.
I feel that I am only at the beginning of this stage of development. Despite the fact that I have not yet resolved this crisis, I feel that I will resolve it by developing intimacy through a long-term relationship with a spouse as well as continuing friendships that I will have forever.
The textbook states, "Not until late adolescence or early adulthood do romantic relationships begin to serve the full gamut of emotional needs that such relationships can serve and then only in relatively long-term relationships (Furman & Wehner, 1997)." (Martorell). This quote from the textbook explains that it is later in adolescence and young adulthood that these romantic and long term relationships begin. This leads to one developing intimacy as a resolution to this stage of crisis.

This stage of development occurs in middle adulthood (30 years to 50 years). Throughout this stage adults begin to sense the feelings of what they are leaving behind and making a positive impact on future generations.
I have yet to enter this stage of development but I believe that I will resolve this crisis by developing generativity. I will do this by pouring into younger generations of children, caring for others, community involvement, and working productively.
The textbook states, " Individuals with more adaptive traits pass on more of those traits to future generations."(Martorell). This quote from the textbook is a perfect example of an influence I want to be on future generations. The traits that I have developed should be passed onto future generations to grow their knowledge.

Integrity vs. Despair

The last stage of development occurs during late adulthood (65+). Throughout this stage of development older adults develop acceptance of their own life and feel satisfaction that they have lived a good life. They also share their wisdom with others.
I have yet to go through this stage of development but I believe that when I so I will resolve the crisis by developing integrity. This will occur through reflection on what has happened in the past and finding joy in the little things as well as sharing this joy with others.
The textbook talks a little bit about Erikson's stages of development and states, "Erikson, while acknowledging that crises could be resolved poorly, left room for improvement. At any point in the life span, development could shift in a positive direction, and a crisis might be successfully resolved and a new strength developed." (Martorell). This quote from the text describes all of the developmental stages and I find it very relevant to the last and final stage because this stage has been developed from all the others. Throughout life it is key to shift development in a positive direction in order to reach integrity at the final stage.
