It was important to Atticus for Jem to understand what Mrs. Dubose was going through because Jem hated her and was very hostile towards and he said he didn't know why she was so mean. Since Atticus is very empathetic and understood what was wrong with her he wanted Jem to know also and to help her beat what she was battling, so she could die happy. Atticus also says "but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself." Atticus is referencing this to the hate he is receiving but he also goes and makes Jem help Mrs. Dubose and I think this quote can also relate to her in a way, she is dying but wants to make things right before she does. Also "courage is knowing your licked before you begin, but begin anyways." that is what Mrs. Dubose was trying to do and Atticus wanted Jem to realize that and not hate her and see her for her attitude and words but for something more. She deserved to be treated with respect and was very courageous, despite her harsh words, she went through a lot to try to make it better. In this sense Atticus and Mrs. Dubose were both looked down upon in some way but kept trying for what was right, Atticus wanted to show Jem this is what was happening with him in a way, and the case, and how to have real courage.

It is important to Atticus that Jem better understood Mrs. Dubose and what she was going through so the kids would also understand why he was defending Tom Robinson. The children had always known of Mrs. Dubose as a cranky old lady who sat on her porch and yelled at them about anything they could. After Jem ruins her flowers, Atticus felt he wasn't compassionate enough because he didn't understand her. After the children grow fonder of Mrs. Dubose they find out that she was a morphine addict and was dying. When Atticus returns home from her house the night she died, he was able to use the kids' knowing her as a way to teach them about bravery and doing what you believe is right. "It's when you know you're licked before you even begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what," when Atticus says this I feel like he is not only telling them about Mrs. Dubose beating her morphine addiction, but also telling them why he was defending Tom Robinson. He knew he was going to lose but he know it was morally correct. All in all, Atticus taught the children about Mrs. Dubose so they could fully understand that sometimes you have to do things that you know are right even if they are difficult and you know you won't come out on top.

Atticus thought that it was important for Jem to understand why Mrs. Dubose was acting like she was because it would change Jems attitude completely. Jem thought Mrs. Dubose was only mean to Jem and Scout because she doesn't like kids and also because she is pretty old. Since she always yelled at the kids they began to hate her even though they didn't really understand why. Atticus thinks it's important no matter how mean she is, is to treat her with respect and be a gentleman towards her since she's a adult. After Jem ruined the flowers and got in trouble he had to start reading to her everyday and he didn't know why. But after awhile Jem found out that Mrs. Dubose was really sick and that she was dying. Mrs. Dubose was showing bravery because she knew she was going to die and she made sure that she was going to die in peace, and that is really brave. He wanted Jem to understand that Mrs. Dubose deserved respect because of everything she had been put through and what she was dealing with. Mrs. Dubose couldn't help the way she was acting, it was all because of her problems and the medicine she had to take everyday. Atticus wanted Jem to know that she is actually a strong and amazing woman who has a lot of bravery and he knows that he would never imagine being put through what she's going through.

It was important to Atticus that Jem better understood Mrs. Dubose and what she was going through because he wanted Jem to realize that Mrs. Dubose was a lady who had been through a lot in her life. He wanted Jem to see what real courage looks like. Mrs. Dubose that she wanted to leave the world beholden to nothing and nobody. Atticus said that through most of Mrs. Dubose's life she was addicted to morphine. For somebody who is already sick, breaking an addiction can be even more painful. This is what Atticus wanted Jem to see. An old women who had made many mistakes in her life, that knew even dying in pain was worth it to say that she was able to upkeep the promises she made in life.

I feel that It was important Atticus because he wanted Jem to feel empathetic and to understand that, regardless of personal opinions, everybody is a human and everybody needs a hand sometimes. This shows when Atticus says that even though he didn't see eye to eye with Dubose, she was still a person and she deserved respect.

It is important to Atticus because that Jem understood what Mrs. Dubose was going through because it showed that Jem was maturing a little. It showed that he could put himself in someone else's shoes and really see what they are going through. It helped him understand that Mrs. Dubose really isn't that bad of a person, her life just isn't very ideal. By now, Jem is beginning to grow up a little more and he is more courteous towards others and acts like a true "gentleman". Jem and Scout both hated her because she was so rude to everyone all the time. Neither of them understood why she was the way she was they just thought she was a mean person. When Jem finally sees what is wrong with her and why she may feel the way she does about other people he begins to understand just what she's had to go through. Jem sees the courage Mrs. Dubose had to stop taking morphine as a painkiller and she was having a hard time without it. He understands why she was such a mean person and that is why Atticus is so proud of him. Atticus knows Jem is maturing and that is important to him.

Atticus knew that there was something wrong with Mrs. Dubose and he wanted Jem to know too so that he didn't think she was mean just to be mean.

It was important to Atticus that Jem new what Mrs. Dubose was going through to understand why she was the way she was. Mrs. Dubose would always yell at the kids as they walked by and would call Jem, Scout and Atticus names. This made Jem very mad one day, and he took Scout's baton and destroyed all of Mrs. Dubose's flowers. His punishment for this was he had to go and read to her every night. The children soon realized that there was something that was making her sick. Every night towards the end of their reading, an alarm clock would go off and she would get medicine. After she died, Atticus told them that she was a morphine addict. I think that Atticus made them go read to her even knowing these things so the children could learn that everyone has their own issues and you don't always know why people do things. They could be really suffering and they might take it out on you without a reason. I think Atticus wanted to teach the kids that you can't judge a person because you don't always know what they are going through.
