Literary Circles are group reading sessions in which your group reads certain parts of the book and then discusses what has happened. Each member should have a chance to share their reflection.

Each reading session will involve a task to complete. It is a group effort that requires a lot of collaboration, one of our key school values.

The task should be completed as a team, with one person scribing the responses on the padlet after team discussion.

Each circle (or group) will report back to the class on what has happened in their chapter/excerpt so that the class can better understand the text. The 'reporter' must be a different person to the scribe.

Each person will then complete a summary of their own.

Literary Circles with a ghost story can be like solving a big puzzle!

1. Why is Beth’s father so upset?
Beth's father is upset because her father died in a car crash caused by the aunty.
2. What did Aunty Viv and Aunty June mean when they told Beth she’d see her mother again ‘on another side’? Did Beth believe them?
Aunty Viv and Aunty June told Beth that she'd see her mother again 'on another side.' They meant that they believe there's another place, like a spiritual world, where people go after they die. Whether Beth believes them or not depends on her own beliefs.
3. What do you think Beth’s Grandpa Jim meant when he said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”?
When Grandpa Jim said, "Life doesn't move through time, Bethie. Time moves through life," he meant that the way we experience time is shaped by our life experiences. Time is not as important as the things that happen in our lives.
4. When Beth describes her father as having “a lost expression [she’d] come to hate”, what do you think that tells us about Beth’s feeling towards her dad’s grief?
When Beth describes her father as having "a lost expression [she'd] come to hate," it means she doesn't like to see her father so sad and confused. She wishes he could feel better, but his grief is difficult for her to handle.
5. In the final paragraph of the extract, describe Beth’s protectiveness over her father.
In the final paragraph, Beth is shown as being very protective of her father. This means she cares about him a lot and wants to make sure he's okay. She wants to keep him safe and help him through his difficult times.

Sample Summary
Beth's father is so upset because he has lost his daughter, Beth, in a car accident. He is struggling to come to terms with the loss and 'stuck in grief' over it. Beth is protective over her father and she describes him as having a 'lost expression [she'd] come to hate.' meaning that she is effected by the pain he is feeling. He can still see her as a ghost - which is a sign of both of them not being ready to let go. She believes she must watch over him while he heals and so it doesn't become too much for him. Beth's Aunties talk of her seeing her mother 'on another side' in the after life (as her mother died years earlier. Although Beth hadn't seen her yet, she knew she would (when she left her dad). When Beth’s Grandpa Jim said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”, he means that life happens and you have to go with whatever will be.

.

Michael can tell that Catching no longer wants to talk about her ordeal, why do you think she can't continue?
We think she cant continue because she is traumatised, In the chapter before this she in the beneath, it is a secret room underneath the childrens home and it where the abuse takes place. "Catching had been through something awful."

Isobel wants to 'be heard' because when she was in captivity she had not been listened to. Noone had cared for her wellbeing or safety and she is crying out for help now.

Isobel isn't ready to talk about the fire yet, she would rather discuss her friend, Crow. Instead of responding to the questions from Michael, she wants to talk about things her way because she needs to get it all of her chest now that she is trusting enough to tell someone. She's had to do whatever she was told for far too long in the 'beneath place'.

She says her connections are broken and she is shattered. She is spoken to by her mother, what impact does this have on Catching?

Sample summary
Catching is taken by the Fetchers and treated like property. They go through tunnels and she is dropped on the floor. The Feed arrives, a white, large man who has no respect for Catching as she is Indigenous. She is grabbed and abused by The Feed. She says "My eyes leak hot tears. My throat rips itself apart with screams I can't scream." This trauma leaves her terrified. The pain she experiences and the hurt that she has felt is too much to bear. Crow informs her that all of the other girls who were here were treated like this and they are all now dead. Catching says her connections are broken and she is shattered. The spirit of her mother speaks to her and Catching says she 'can endure' and get through it with the help of remembering the strength of her ancestors.

What do we learn about Catching and Beth when Beth storms back in to the hospital? we find out that catching can see Beth and that ability was passed down all the women in her family, Beth found out that when spirits get a big surge of energy they can make things blow up and there is another world she needs to move onto but her dads holding her back.
4. Why does Catching have this ability? this ability was passed down through all the women in her family.
5. Why was the anger bubbling up inside of Beth?
she was getting angry because catching was saying that it is her dads fault she cant move onto the spirit world and she was being sarcastic saying things like, "oh so your going to hold his hand for the rest of his life" and "let me guess, you were going somewhere else but decided to stay for your sad old man."
6. What has made Beth cry by the end of the chapter? Can you link it o the quote "Hang about and hold your dad's hand for the rest of his life"?
Beth was upset because she started thinking about how her aunty used to call her 'butterfly girl' but she didn't feel like that anymore because she felt her dad was weighing her down. she felt like she had to stay and be there for her family but she couldn't. she kept thinking about what catching said, ("hang about and hold your dads hand for the rest of his life.") she started to feel like it was true.

summary
-Michael and Beth went to the hospital to see the witness to the fire. (Isobel catching)
-Isobel talks about her mother dying in a car accident
-the nurses say that child services have found her mother.
-Michael doesn't believe Isobel and says "I don't think she was lying, she was just telling the truth in her own way."
-Beth believes catching.
-Beth finds out Isobel can see her.
- Beth makes a light explode.

As Allie drives, Michael asks whether she went to school with Derek and Alexander Sholt. She says she did, though they were a little older. Alexander went to boarding school for a while but returned after his grandfather, Oscar Sholt, spent too much of the family money preparing for the apocalypse he believed was coming. Alexander made a lot of that money back on the stock market as an adult. Beth, knowing Allie can't hear her, suggests that Alexander made the money back dealing drugs or committing other crimes. Allie praises Alexander Sholt’s charity, mentioning that some townspeople didn’t want him to set up the home. Others wanted to volunteer there, but unfortunately, they were told that by law, only people employed at the home could work there. Beth asks Michael whether that’s a real law. When he shakes his head slightly, she suggests that Alexander fabricated it to keep townspeople from the home.
