Tabloid Journalism by Anna Ravid

Questions:

Who should bear responsibility for regulating unethical journalistic practices? The government? Media companies? The consumer?

How much liberty can the media take with the facts in the sake of entertainment or attracting more viewers? Where do you think is the line between news entertainment and deliberate misinformation, slander, or harassment?

Sensationalism sells. As long as media companies have that financial incentive, they'll keep distorting the facts to stir up drama and resentment.

I think entertainment journalism lies in this liminal space between "news/features," which is all objective, hard facts reporting, and "opinion," which is obviously subjective. That makes it so much harder to determine when a line has been crossed, and whether someone is undermining journalistic integrity.

I wonder if the Harry/Meghan & Oprah interview will change the tabloid industry in any way.

I think there should be some way to regulate what is being put into the world. Untrue or misleading information leads to conflict and even violence. Maybe the media companies should do so, or maybe there could be a group that facilitates it (like how the FDA is responsible for making sure food companies meet guidelines)

I think it should fall on the government and media companies to regulate unethical journalism since they have the most oversight and power in these situations. Making something more dramatic and employing the idea of "clickbait" is fine in most situations as long as the realities of the situation are clarified in the actual article.

I think that we as consumers have a responsibility to read articles and stories which are reliable, rather than looking for the craziest story out there. Though I don't think it's our responsibility to regulate these unethical practices, I think we should be aware about the reliability of the things we read.

I think everyone: the government, media companies, and the consumers should bear responsibility for regulating journalistic practices. Media companies should be aware of how their journalists are getting their information and the governemnt should step in if anything goes agaisnt the laws. Consumers should also keep in check media companies from going too far. The media should not go past breaking into someone's liberties and personal information to try and attract more viewers.
