This roughly 15 acre Surf Pines Prairie property hosts patches of remnant coastal prairie on historical dune complexes associated with the mouth of the Columbia River. This series of dunes contains a mosaic of interdunal lakes and wetland swales, spruce forest fringes, shorepine forests, grazed and fallow pastures, residential neighborhoods. The coastal prairie is an early successional plant community that historically persisted from frequent disturbance regimes of blowing sand from younger dunes. The prairie no longer receives its historic disturbance regime due to stabilization associated with extensive development and invasive species. This property is part of a network of nearby lands that comprise a larger wildlife corridor and most notably serves as potential habitat for the now-rare Oregon silverspot butterfly. Ongoing experimental restoration efforts on this degraded prairie habitat involve disturbance, invasive species removal, and planting with native prairie species such as early blue violets known to be associated with Oregon silverspot butterfly.

There are several blue line streams that feed a large reservoir on the property. The wetland resources and serpentine soils have been impacted by intensive cattle grazing. Our management goals are to maintain and enhance wetland resources for the benefit of fish and wildlife, create refugia for rare and sensitives species, and maintain an active cattle ranch as an example of transition to perennial grassland/oak woodland savannah.

We hope to acquire 3 additional parcels in the next 1-2 years to then hold roughly 50 acres in conservation. This is habitat that will sea rising waters from the tidal river, increased storm pressures, increased precipitation, possibly increased erosion, and likely be transitional riparian habitat in the future due to climate change. Project objectives include safe public recreational access with ability to post storm-related alerts, reducing the invasive vegetation to help soil composition and reduce erosion risk, and overall keeping development off of the riverfront.

This property is located in southern King County, WA in the transition zone between the Puget lowlands and the western foothills of the Cascades. The 22 acre parcel houses unique plant communities including the Tsuga/Sphagnum treed bog and the Tsuga/Ledum/Sphagnum treed bog with many species found only in the nutrient poor and saturated soils. The bog formed from the gradual filling in of a glacial lake, which was in turn formed by a detached piece of the retreating Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. The bog is estimated to be 8-10,000 years old based upon recent peat core depths of ~65 feet. The wetlands are primarily rainfed, and help to slow and filter stormwater moving into adjacent Shadow Lake and further into Jenkins Creek, a tributary of Green River and Duwamish Waterway. The surrounding landscape is a mix of residential and agricultural lands, both of which present potential negative impacts to the bog (eg. trespassing on the sensetive ground and agricultural runoff shifting nutrient regimes). A boardwalk was constructed in the 2000s to allow for low impact public access, and interpretative materials and seating areas have been erected as scout projects.

Knapp Land is located in the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas in the northern portion of the Chihuahuan Desert. The 353 acres are part of the Franklin Mountains, a tilted fault-block mountain range composed of mainly sedimentary rock with some igneous intrusions. The flora and fauna on Knapp Land are representative of species found in similar elevations and substates throughout the Franklin Mountains.

We are currently trying to design a management plan addressing water flow and erosion control at our property. We are starting to experience higher and longer precipitation events occurring more often in the El Paso region, then followed by extended drought conditions. Summer 2021 was a clear example since we were able to see how the property was significantly affected by heavy precipitation events that lasted longer than we usually predict. The land was impacted by these events positively and negatively. Our arroyos had expanded or (doubled) in size (length, width, and height), affecting our trails for multi-users, roads, and wildlife game trails. Our management /adaptation plan will be to monitor our arroyos before and after precipitation events happen, as they start to occur more often in the desert. We will also collect data by identifying critical points in the arroyos and installing water gauges, taking measurements of the arroyos (length, width, and height), and aerial imaging to see the expansion and erosion damage, if any.

This is a 9-acre parcel that once was a part of a large tidal wetland along the eastern bank of the Nehalem River, in Wheeler, Oregon. It was diked off from the river and surrounding wetlands sometime before 1939.

We want to reestablish a sitka wetland and tidal wetland habitat on the property by breaching the dike between this property and the neighboring wetland.

The goal is to reestablish daily tidal influence, allow driftwood to enter in order to establish bordering sitka swamp habitat, allow/encourage channels to form, and maintain a healthy tidal wetland plant community to support the property as sanctuary for young salmonids.

This will provide sanctuary from global warming impacts by establishing shaded channels for young salmonids to shelter during high water events and other adverse conditions.
