Visual Representation is used in the classroom to assess the depth of student's understanding of a certain topic.
Graphic organizers are good examples of Visual Representation. These allow students to organize their thoughts and display their understanding in a more creative way.
Allowing students to use models, manipulatives, timelines, Power Points, posters, etc. are all ways to assess students understanding and/or knowledge through the use of Visual Representation.

Visual representations differ by subject. For mathematics set models, arrays, grids, area models, and length models can be used as visual representations.
In Social Studies, teachers can use timelines, powerpoints, and graphic organizers as visual representations.
In reading and writing, teachers can use posters, KWL(know, want to know, learned) charts, and graphic organizers as visual representations.

The ability to draw on multiple representations is an important aspect of students' mathematical understanding and they enable the students to make connections between their own experiences and the concepts they are learning.
Drawing out a problem or concept, graphing lists of data, or placing numbers on a number line all help to make more complex concepts simpler. If students develop this strategy early, they can find ways of thinking that they can use as they advance in their learning of more complex concepts.
