Defining the Purpose

There was many main purposes to the film as a whole but one that stood out in particular was to bring awareness about ALS and how it can effect a whole family. Also, another takeaway with to life your life with purpose. The director made this film to reflect the hardships of daily life that not many people realize. He wanted to get across the feeling of that father-son relationship and how and why it kept him going on with his life.

Quotes:
"I have moments where I miss my old self. But I think anyone can get caught up in what we used to have. But at the same time, we can choose to focus on the beauty of now".

"Life is difficult. Not just for me or other ALS patients. Life is difficult for everyone. Finding ways to make life meaningful and purposeful and rewarding, doing the activities that you love and spending time with the people that you love - I think that's the meaning of this human experience".

"I think about death all the time. I think that's a good thing because we're all going to die, and the only thing we can control is how we are and what we're doing in the meantime"..

Achieving the Purpose

I definitely think thee movie achieved its purpose especially by appealing to the watchers emotion like it did. They wanted you to think twice about it and it really had that effect. the bias here would be that some viewers only see the fight for ALS and not the complete story behind it.

Quotes:

"What I think is so interesting is that, uh, this is obviously--
This whole thing,
these video journals,
this film,
all this is about
a father and a son".

"No matter what,
how wealthy you are,
how poor you (Rivers) are,
we all face adversity.
I do not want you to fail,
but I want you to
put yourself out there,
and available for
potential rejection".

"Happy birthday to you
[CHEERING, APPLAUSE]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[]
WOMAN:
When you blow out,
you gotta blow out
hard and fast,
'cause it's measuring
how much you get out
in one second, okay?".

I think that it really has an effect how the director put the video of Rivers blowing out the candles right before gleason has trouble breathing. It just shows the struggle.

Conclusion

Its sad to see that most reviews are about the ALS fight when thee purpose of the movie was to enjoy your own life, while helping others along the way when you can. A major part of this movie relates to the conversation of healthcare and what needs to be done. Especially for the patients who have something that is maybe not so common; this movie and others like it can really help push towards more funding for that.
