Malaysia is still poor by United Nation standard. Malaysia claims that the poverty rate has reduced to less than 1% but UN says otherwise. This is because Malaysia poverty line is too low which only under USD 240 per household every month. In other words, every Malaysian has the budget of USD 2 per day. With that kind of budget, surely the standard of living is compromise. That is why UN claims Malaysia poverty rate is much higher which is 15%. In simpler words, 1 every 6 Malaysian is poor. Malaysia's Minister of Economic Affairs Azmin Ali has expressed disappointment towards the latest poverty report by United Nations special rapporteur Philip Alston. Mr Azmin has slammed Mr Alston's remarks as unacceptable and irresponsible. But on Mr Alston defence, based on his recent visit to Malaysia says otherwise. Alston who's just completed an 11 day visit across four states in Malaysia including the East Malaysian state of Sabah and Sarawak puts the country's poverty rate at at least fifteen percent the most vulnerable groups he said struggling with poverty are the orang asli or the indigenous people, the undocumented workers, the stateless people including children and refugees and asylum-seekers.

Indonesia's Poverty Problem

This video discuss about the poverty problem in Indonesia. The number of Indonesian in absolute poverty has halved in last 20 years but the number of 'near poor' is rising. According to Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of Indonesia, it is not easy for Indonesia to create more resiliency in terms of the growth that can create jobs and reduce poverty. This is because there is a mismatch between the government's capabilities and the people's expectations. Due to rapid technological advances and widespread use of social media, people can connect and share their feelings faster such as the impatience feeling to the government. She recognized that many policy makers are constantly challenged with the ability to manage the expectation of people. The people expect the government is not only giving the answers but the solution that can solve the poverty problem. However, it is almost impossible for any policy makers to satisfy. (153 words)

Indonesia's Poverty Problem: Interview with Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

What's the truth about Malaysian Poverty? | NEWSFLASH

In this news the presenter talks about how Malaysia measures poverty or who Malaysia categorises as poor. According to the Malaysia's government, households earning below RM 980 in peninsular, below RM 1020 in Sarawak and below RM 1180 in Sabah are considered as absolute poor in Malaysia. This income threshold is called the Poverty Line Income (PLI). The UN special rapporteur who visits Malaysia in 2019, said that Malaysia's data of poverty is not accurate, where the actual poverty rate is about 16% - 20%. But Malaysia government dismisses UN Rep's claim of high poverty rate. However, a lot of research that agrees with the UN Rep's criticisms. The World Bank categories Malaysia as an Upper-Middle income country which would raise its official poverty line amount to USD 5.50 per day. According to Prof. Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria, he stated that Malaysia's poverty is still rated based on the measurement framework as in 1950's - 1970's and because of this our poverty line figures stand a bit low. Malaysia government must change the measurement of poverty according to the state of the development in the country, he added. In the 10th Malaysia Plan, government focuses on the low-income segments, specifically the bottom 40% (meaning the 40% with the lowest income) which consists of 2.4 million households. According to SPV2030, the income disparity between the T20 and B40 has grown from RM 1935 in 1989 to RM 10,148 in 2016. The poverty cannot only be measured based on one dimension as only the household income, but there are also some other factors that have to be measured too. The SPV2030 aims to provide a decent standard of living to all Malaysians, and it has its sight set on achieving income equality. In Budget 2020, the government plans to raise the minimum wage to pushing for providing access to water and electricity to the rural parts of Sabah and Sarawak.

FOOD POVERTY IN SINGAPORE
Food insecurity occurs frequently in Singapore albeit known as a wealthy nation. Food insecurity is the situation of not knowing when the next meal can be achieved or the inability to choose the food that will fulfil their needs or diet. This adversity occurs usually in large families or families filled with elderlies. Many families suffer from malnourishment due to debt traps too. ComCare fund offers short to medium term assistance but only to those of a household income of S$1,900 or income per capita of S$600 or below. However, even if assistance were given, the money given by associations were used to pay off debts rather than for food, causing many to survive each day on a hungry stomach.

Che Muhammad Firdaus 262015
Why Vietnam is still poor
There are many factors that make Vietnam still having a problem in poverty. After many years of independence, Vietnam still a "third world" among ASEAN countries and poverty percentage still high. According to Committee for Ethnic Minority Affair (CEMA), poverty in Vietnam are very bad and need a lot of attention. Population of Vietnam is about 100 million people make this issue worse. Majority of Vietnam people are live below the poverty line. Huge family members and least job opportunities in Vietnam makes poverty in Vietnam almost impossible to overcome. First factor of why Vietnam still have a problem in poverty is because mismanagement of fund. Government of Vietnam seems to take for granted of fund and not implement transparency in governing. Next factors are resisting western influence. Vietnam is a country that not very open until last few years. Third, no infrastructure and no private sector growth. Development in Vietnam are mostly depends on government with just small interference of private sector. This will make development progress becomes poor and slow. Another factor is because corruption in high places. Corruption and white-collar crimes are very bad this lead to no trust among investor and citizens of Vietnam. Next, factors that influence the poverty in Vietnam is natural hazard. Vietnam are always had a disaster in natural. This will lead to many deaths and lost of property that make life of citizens becomes more poor. Last factors are because a turbulent pass. History have shown that Vietnam War have affected the country and life of Vietnamese. War with America in 1955 have affected the economic and life of Vietnam. War with China and Cambodia also have make poverty in Vietnam very bad. In conclusion, there many factors that make Vietnam poverty becomes very bad. However, the poverty can be overcome if only the government are creative and implement high integrity in governing

Through various anti-poverty programs, such as the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform, Lingap Para sa Mahirap, and the Social Reform Agenda, the Philippines has been through a long battle to ameliorate that statistic. Despite these governmental efforts, the Millennium Development Goal milestone of reduction in poverty has been a slow process. The poor in the Philippines are most likely self-employed farmers, fishermen, or other agricultural workers. Three-quarters of these people live in severe disaster-risk areas that are highly rural. In 2015, about 58 percent of poor households have more that six members. Education overall has improved over time; from the ages of 15–24, over 75 percent have completed secondary education or above in 2015. Specifically in poor households, however, over 60 percent of families have education only up to elementary school. Of those who live in poverty, in 2012, 18.4 million people accounted for extreme poverty, living with about $1.25 per day. The challenges that such people face are vulnerability to natural disasters, weak governance, inadequate health services, lack of natural resources and more. The poor face an expensive process of recovering from vulnerability, just to face another conflict which then restarts the cycle.

The actual statistics by the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights show that the poverty rate in Malaysia is between 16% to 20%. The World Bank categorises Malaysia as an upper-middle income country which would raise its official poverty line amount to USD5.50 per day. According to Prof Datuk Dr Denison Jayasuriya, a principal research fellow of National Institute of Ethnic Studies (UKM), he stated that one needs to change the measurement of poverty is according to the state of development in the country. The concept of relative poverty can be applied to what Dr Denison said. Poverty should not defined solely by income, so the government implemented Multidimensional Poverty Index, MPI to solve poverty problems more effectively.

Besides, there are 7 millions poor in the country and more than a quarter of them are elderies. Most of them rely solely on the 600 Baht provided by the universal social pension as their monthly income.

Living in Graveyards: Why Some People in Philippines Are Living With the Dead

This video is about thousands of people in the Philippines are living in slums inside public cemeteries. Like many of its Asian neighbors, the Philippines have been site of rapid economic growth of the past two decades. Following a period of martial law and strictly controlled rural provinces, peasants and farmers began moving to the nation’s capital, Manila, in the 1980s looking for better lives. Without any money to guarantee their livelihood, they had no choice but to build illegal slums throughout the city. More and more people moves to the cities, and the slums got even more massive. As a result, people even began to live in public spaces such as cemeteries. Foreign investment and growth in the manufacturing industries have made the Philippines’ economy soar to new heights. But as can see with other developing nations, the poorer classes are often left behind when growth occurs too quickly. (150 words)

Even with the efforts done by CEMA to improve the education and social opportunities for the minorities, they still face other issues such as ethnic discrimination. Second is mismanagement of fund. Vietnam strategizes with USA to transform the development of the country and set their SDGs to achieve by 2030. However, poverty remains. Next is due to the resisting western influence which caused them to fall behind advanced countries. Vietnam also faces failing infrastructure systems in which the government needs to accelerate productivity investments. Besides, the corruption in the government itself is a concern. Singaporeans Against Poverty, the campaign whose concern is “for those in Singapore caught in the cycle of poverty despite our economic success,” began the $5 challenge, where people can pledge money and try to live on a $5 per day budget.

Some Singaporeans have no income. A survey from the Housing Development Board showed that one-third of Singaporeans living in one or two room flats have no source of income. Additionally, an Ipsos APAC and Toluna study found that 62 percent of Singaporeans state that their dissatisfaction is a result of their personal financial situation. However, as in most societies, there would be those who for reasons of disadvantaged family background, poor health condition, physical or mental challenges, or misfortunes are unable or less able to access available opportunities leading to better paying jobs and a decent quality of life. Clearly, without a leg-up from the state, community, and fellow Singaporeans, the multiple disadvantages they experience would likely perpetuate their poor material condition, as well as produce a strong sense of hopelessness about their own future and that of their dependents. Singapore is known as an affluent society or, at the very least, a middle class society. It has a vibrant, adaptive knowledge-based economy which produces much opportunities for employment and social mobility. It has enabled most Singaporeans to enjoy a significantly high standard of living, including quality housing, healthcare and education.

They believed should be higher. The World Bank categorises Malaysia as upper-middle income country which would raise its official poverty line amount to USD5.50 per day. This means the USD1.90 line is deliberately low. So, we need specific policies and programs. However, even if poverty line is raised, it’s not helping to reduce poverty problem because the poor are not a homogenous group. The causes of their poverty are different. So poverty shouldn’t be defined solely by income. Since 2016, the government has started using Multidimensional Poverty Index.
(118 words)
