Exemplar: Farmers and the Great Depression by B. Barber

This is an example of what I expect for the photo essay. Notice that I have clearly stated my thesis at the beginning. I've also outlined my main arguments. I then go on to include captioned pictures for each argument that prove my points. At the end I have also include my works cited.

Despite economic and social decline in the 1930's, technology advanced to use the first ever coloured film in the movies such as the famous Wizard of Oz, which in of itself was made as a representation of the Great Depression, beginning out in the hard hit rural areas of North America. (this caption needs work because the connection to my thesis is not very clear).

The Great Depression was by far the worst on rural populations, leading to the highest levels of poverty in Canada during the 1930s.

Arguments: (this can be listed or in paragraph form)
1) Financial struggles plagued farmers prior to the stock market crash, meaning they faced financial challenges of the Great Depression longer than others.
2) The Canadian West became the Dustbowl; a drought stricken and insect infested wasteland meant farm production slowed.
3) Agriculture mechanization meant fewer workers were employed on growing farms, even prior to the extensive droughts the Prairies were facing.

The flat geography, dry climate and high winds of the Prairies in the 30s meant dust storms such as these were common and quite dangerous. Due to the poor climate conditions and soil quality, farms couldn't produce nearly as much they used to, which resulted in huge financial losses. (This is a good caption and picture - it clearly shows the impact of climate on farms and is easily connected to my thesis with the caption)

Camrose, Alberta - 1900: At the turn of the century, farming was highly based on manual labour like you would see below. With a couple decades, it became more mechanized and used more modern technology like tractors for seeding, plowing and cultivating. While this made production increase, it also meant fewer workers could be employed per farm, which lead to higher unemployment than urban areas of Canada.
