The defeat of Germany brought about the Treaty of Versailles, which burdened Germany with the responsibility of rebuilding the Allied nations when Germany itself was still struggling with the aftermath of the war in their own country. The reparations that Germany was made to pay accelerated hyper-inflation in the country as the Weimar government began printing money. This led to German currency becoming worthless. Hence, during that period of time, the Germans had to borrow money from the Americans under the Dawes Plan and the Young Plan to lift themselves out of the situation. Yet, due to the Wall Street Crash in 1929 and the Great Depression that followed, Germany’s financial situation fell back to where it was before. The Germans were humiliated by this string of events and fuelled their anger and frustration at the Weimar government.

After fighting in World War 1 as a foot soldier, Hitler felt that he had attained personal success and found his life’s purpose, and hence was keen to continue the serving in the German army after the war. He attended courses for solas at camp ledgefeld and soon after recruited to do speech-making and proved to be a speaker with great influence. He was then sent by the army to observe a far-right group called the German workers party, a group founded in Munich in January 1919, and whose binding ideas were entrenched in racism and anti-Semitism. During this period, Hitler absorbed the party’s anti-Semitic views and beliefs, and became even more involved in it, rising to the position of head of propaganda. In 1920, Hitler renamed the party to become the National Socialist German’s Worker’s Party of which he was named president a year later.

Rudolf Hess— Born on April 26, 1894 in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a radical nationalist who was transfixed by Hitler’s speeches. He saw international politics as a struggle between people of different races, and was a fanatical supporter of Hitler’s.

Herman Goering— Was from Rosenheim, Bavaria, born on January 12, 1893. He had, inthe 1920s, built up a big military reputation, having served as a distinguished Air Force pilot in the First World War. He had succeeded Baron von Richthofen as head of the von Richthofen squadron after the shooting of the Red Baron. Felt that Hitler’s ideas resonated with his own feelings of resentment and loss and became a committed follower of Hitler.

Heinrich Himmler— From a Roman Catholic middle class family, and born October 7th, 1900 in Munich. He had wanted to fight in the First World War but was too young, and hence always had a sense of frustration over not being able to fight on Germany’s behalf. He was a patriot and a strong anti-Semite and gravitated towards the National Socialism party as it seemed to him as the natural choice.

Martin Bormann— A son of a post office worker born June 17, 1900, he joined the Freikorps, one of the vigilante groups that was born in Germany in the 1920s. He was sent to prison for murdering somebody, but when he emerged and heard one of Hitler’s speeches, he felt that Hitler’s beliefs resonated with him and thus became a devoted follower of Hitler.

Joseph Goebbels— Born October 29, 1897, he had a university education, held a doctorate and studied German literature in the 19th century. Even before meeting Hitler, he wrote a novel titled Michael which was exactly the description of a leader like Hitler. Hitler’s idea that Germans in Germany should all be united on an equal basis appealed to him and coupled with the fact that he was looking for a political movement that represented his personal position at the time, he became a recruit of the National Socialist Party.

Germany suffered economically. Not only had they faced great economic losses from World War 1, but they were further affected by the Treaty of Versailles which robbed Germany of its potential sources of income and forced them to pay reparations to the Allies. This led to high rates of unemployment and hyper inflation as the Weimar Government had over printed cash. The economic situation was temporarily improved by loans provided by the US. However, the Great Depression had caused Germany to return to its poor financial situation.

During the time of hitler’s imprisonment, he took the time to write a book about his struggles. The book was around 600 pages. The enforced silence and confinement gave him time for introspection, and his thoughts came through the pen. The writing of mein kampf fueled hitler’s desire for power and the need to lead Germany.
Hitler was also silenced and could not speak publicly. He turned that silence into propaganda to attack the Weimar government for censorship

The german go government then printed money to try and pay the reparations, but that caused inflation which the government did not do anything to help.
