The compromise of 1850 was a division of territories set by the United states government. The slave Holding states and the north argued on the new territories and who they belonged to. The compromise itself relieved some of the tension between the north and south. According to historians, "The Compromise became possible after the sudden death of President Zachary Taylor, who, although a slave owner, wanted to exclude slavery from the Southwest. Whig leader Henry Clay designed a compromise, which failed to pass in early 1850 because of opposition by both pro-slavery southern Democrats".

This really upset the northerners because they believed that it shouldn't be up for debate however it pleased the southerners. People fled into the states that were up for debate to influence the outcomes and this period came to be known as bleeding Kansas because of the sheer amount of violence in this area which was up for debate. People consider this one of the most important things that led up to the american civil war.

This means that slave owners can come up to the free states and capture their slaves and force them to work for them again. This angered the northerners because some slave owners would claim slaves to be theirs that were in reality free people and it created more tension.

His plan was to get together with a group of people and they were going to raid Harper´s ferry while they would collect the slaves as they went along. Although their efforts did not last long. According to ushistory.com, "Brown's strange effort to start a rebellion was over less than 36 hours after it started; however, the consequences of his raid would last far longer. In the North, his raid was greeted by many with widespread admiration. While they recognized the raid itself was the act of a madman, some northerners admired his zeal and courage. Church bells pealed on the day of his execution and songs and paintings were created in his honor".

The Differences between the north and the south cab be contributed to why they declared war. The north did not have a need for slaves because they did not have any land that was good for a plantation and the land is more suitable for smaller farms. Because the different areas had different needs they weren't always open to the accommodating of the other areas.According to battlefeilds.org, "The Civil War that raged across the nation from 1861 to 1865 was the violent conclusion to decades of diversification. Gradually, throughout the beginning of the nineteenth century, the North and South followed different paths, developing into two distinct and very different regions".

This was the election of Abraham Lincoln. The primary issue with this election was the issues of slavery and states rights . This issue and the outcome of the election angered the citizens of the south and eventually led up to secession and the attack on Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was the first Battle of the Civil War. A historian quote is, "The South was committed to an agrarian way of life. It was a land where profitable and efficient plantations worked by slave labor produced cotton for the world market. It was also a land where a majority of its white population was made up of subsistence farmers who lived isolated lives on the edge of poverty and whose literacy rates were low compared with those in the more densely populated North". This shows that the two parts were going in different directions before secession.
