Cruel and Unusual punishment was a fitting title for chapter 14. CruelChapter 14 summarizes multiple occasions in which Bryan Stevenson defends youth who were unjustly punished. He constantly references the 8th amendment "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." during his cases when he defends imprisoned youth. The most impactful story he follows is that of Joe Sullivan. He, along with 2 others, went to an elderly woman's house to rob her of her jewelry. Coincidentally the older woman was raped later on in the day and Joe was falsely accused of committing the heinous act. Police destroyed DNA samples taken after the rape, giving Joe no basis with which to defend himself. "Joe, just one year into his adolescence, was sent to adult prison... [where] he was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted."(Stevenson 259) Joes experience in prison was horrific and yet he was not destroyed mentally or emotionally, as described by Brian when they first met. " his face was tear stained, and his eyes were red, but he looked up at me and began clapping his hands giddy"(Stevenson 262) Stevenson goes into great detail to describe his initial meeting with Joe and creates a wonderful visual of the entire experience. The chapter ends on a bitter sweet note with Joe reading a simplistic poem about prison life and his desire to leave one day.
