Technological advances, increasing wealth and population ageing have contributed to increasing demand for healthcare worldwide. Governments and healthcare organizations however have limited resources to meet these demands and therefore need to decide how to spend their budget in an optimal way.

The broad and diverse impacts of health problems on patients and society pose clear challenges for the evaluation of the costs and benefits of alternative intervention strategies to address these health problems. Yet, such information is of crucial importance for medical and policy decision-makers when deciding about optimal treatment and the funding of new interventions.

The specialisation in economic evaluation teaches these skills and equips students for working in the private and public sector. This involves knowledge of how to measure quality of life and costs, and to develop simulation models that allow estimation of the short- and long-term consequences of interventions as well as the uncertainty in these estimates
