In the 1920's the economy was booming. The rich would get richer and the poor would get children. The rich people like Tom and Daisy. you can tell from this quote that the rich probably don't realize the poor exist, "Why they came from the East I don't know. They had spent a year in France for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together (pg.)."

In the Great Gatsby it is mentioned in this quote that Tom Buchanan plays polo and Jordan plays golf. The rich played sports to satisfy their boredom in the 1920. "Why they came East I don't know. They had spent a year in France for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together. This was a permanent move, said Daisy over the telephone, but I didn't believe it – I had no sight into Daisy's heart, but I felt that Tom would drift on forever seeking, a little wistfully, for the dramatic turbulence of some irrecoverable football game," (pg.6). This quote tells us that sports were still a big part in peoples lives in the 1920s.

After the Great War, social customs and morals became more relaxed and a fashion movement began. It began with women known as flappers. Flappers were women who would smoke, drink, and wear tons of makeup. In the Great Gatsby we see plenty of flappers at Gatsby's famous parties which can be seen from this quote, "Her eyebrows had been plucked and then drawn on again at a more rakish angle but the efforts of nature toward the restoration of the old alignment gave a blurred air to her face. When she moved about there was an incessant clicking as innumerable pottery bracelets jingled up and down upon her arms," (pg.30)

In the Great Gatsby it is shown that things were ran with money. The more money you had the more you could get away with. Money controlled politics in the 1920s. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one . . . just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had," (pg. 1). This quote tells us that not all the people in the world have the same advantages as everyone else, this is because people with money ran politics. Some were greedy with their money and some were so caught up in achieving their selfishly obsessive goals that they didn't acknowledge those who didn't have money.

Jazz music was very popular in the 1920's . it was the type of music that was played at every party that Gatsby threw at his mansion. "Gatsby and Daisy danced. I remember being surprised by his his graceful, conservative fox-trot-- I had never seen him dance before" (pg. 112), this quote shows that music especially jazz music is prevalent throughout the book.
