21st Century Learners

Its the twenty-first century, this means that we have to use the twenty-first way of learning. In education its been noticed that we are always struggling to make terms with new advancements in technology and the way that kids learn. Students use their little pieces of technology and have so much access to so much new information out there, we have to find a way to incorporate these things in a beneficial way. An article I read brought a few things to my attention.

In order to make this change there is some things that we have to do that would really make a difference. We as the educators need to stay atop of the new trends and apps that are being used. Staying up to date gives us the chance to see what the kids are into, what would spark their interest in everyday activities. If we paid attention to these things we could come up with ways to incorporate these ideas or different ways to use the same technology. Another benefit to this is that knowing whats "hip", we can better connect with the students.
Something else I read mentioned teachers teaching to the whole mind, I think this is extremely relevant in today's society. We have learned about all the different ways kids learn and retain knowledge, now we have even more ways to help them learn and that is something we should be taking advantage of. There are a bunch of ways out here to help kids learn, coming from regular textbooks all the way to learn through games on tablets. Teachers need to be able to use all these ways in their classroom to help every child, by changing paces and strategies.
Lastly, from this article I got the understanding that letting the kids use their technology is needed. For how much this upcoming generation uses technology, its like taking away a vital tool for them when they get to school. Having the children cut out the use of technology is blocking the children from resources, teaching children to collaborate, research, and share is beneficial to them for their future, technology is being used more and more in society.
Switching to this new way of teaching and learning can be rocky at the beginning, it will take time to train all the teachers to use the new devices and technology and for the students to get used to the change. After the transition though, this new way of learning would be extremely beneficial for the kids in the future of the work industry, with all this early on use, they have more knowledge on the technology, making them more desirable in the workplace. The real question is, after all this data research and studies, how long will it take for the educational system to make these changes, and will the rest of the public agree on the same idea?

Technology can make Students more Intellectual

Today we use technology for almost everything in our day to day activities. The generation that is upcoming is being exposed to so many things and becoming more aware of the surroundings that they're in. The idea of children becoming more intellectual because of this seems alarming but I think that it is all true, when these kids get on the internet they are automatically exposed to many people meaning many different views and ideas. Also when they have to use this they have to learn more quicker because this is what they're using in their everyday schoolwork. When I was younger, we didn't use very much, we went to the computer labs once a week for about an hour. Now in school they use individual laptops everyday. The efficiency level that they are working on is much higher than what mine was when I was at the same age. Because these children have so much more knowledge on just these things alone, they have a different understanding than what we did, making them mature faster. I think that the kids using technology helps the children use their thinking skills and organization skills because they need these while using this technology.
We should wonder though: Is this good or bad for them? All this technology can affect the level of imagination that these children have, taking away their childhood. Having so much technology introduced that everything can be done online, and there is so much that you can do even though tech is evolving. While this is a concern, maybe intellectualism can be good for the children because it can help them most succeed when they get out into the real world. There are some skills that I know we all wish we had when we were younger, so this could be beneficial. Should we continue down this path, or should we pump the brakes?

Assistive Technology

What do we mean when we say something about assistive technology? When we talk about it we mean any sort of technology that will help the student get closer to their goal when they are in an IEP. Assistive technology can be low to high tech, meaning it can be as simple as the fun colorful pencil gripers to help with writing skills all the way to apps that can be downloaded on mobile devices to help students in whatever areas they need help in. When we introduce this to our kids we have to think about a few main ideas: Is this beneficial to out kids learning?, What considerations should we make when we start this up?, and lastly Can the staff give these results efficiently?
I think that this kind of technology could be something really cool and fresh! Giving these opportunities for more evenly flowing education is amazing, there are so many options that we have to give to the students. Also, not all of the devices cost a lot of money, a lot of them we can put together ourselves. Just to name a few of the gadgets that we can use as assistive technology are pencil grippers, notepads, cue cards, and highlighters. Those b=objects are things that we may already have laying around in the classroom, and they can be transformed into something to help with motor or learning disabilities.
When considering assistive technology we do have things to consider, things like how quickly technology advances, this needs to be considered because the fact that technology advances so quickly we don't have completely accurate research to show that its improving quick enough. With how fast new things come out in technology its hard to keep up, so we as the educators have to have some trust in what the people who produce the technology say.Though it is a fear that the students will begging to souly rely on the tech they are given. That is when the educators come in to regulate how much and how they use the tech. Another consideration is the amount of time it will take to effectively teach this technology to the educators.
Its a big responsibility to learn about all of the technology then effectively teach it to your students. This is something to think about, the amount of time it will take before we can present it to the students. We have to make sure that the educators are given enough time, they can probably train for this before school opens up in the summer.
Assistive technology, I believe, can be extremely beneficial in the schools and I hope that its something that we can later see as something normal in the classroom. Just like everything else new, it has its kinks, but dont you think it will be worth it?
