Although some students may pick up on word reading through exposure to text, the majority of students need direct instruction in order to develop automatic word recognition, which is needed for higher levels of reading comprehension.

We know that much of the research is not used in undergrad programs, teacher prep, curriculum, etc. so best practices are not used in classrooms as often as they should be. Therefor, students are not making the progress that they could be, especially in disadvantaged communities.

Teachers need to be provided with knowledge and training to successfully teach students to learn to read. Teaching reading is a multi-faceted art. To successfully teach students to read teachers need training, resources and other supports to successfully teach reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, and fluency. Each component to reading is very complex and important. We cannot simply expose students to texts and expect them to know how to read and write. We need to provide readers with tools to help them to recognize words and sounds accurately and with automaticity. ALL students have the ability to read and succeed at doing so, we need to provide students with explicit instruction to aid in the success of each student.
