Stage 1. Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's development is very important because it helps the child develop a sense of trust. If the care is not consistent, predictable, or reliable, then the child could possibly suffer from mistrust and anxiety which they would take with them into the future. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Baby develops sense of whether world is a good and safe place", when it comes to this stage. When I was young my mom always made sure my needs were met. She would always hold me when I was crying and would sing songs to me. My mom said she would always sing "You Are My Sunshine" to me whenever I was crying and I would stop. I definitely grew up with Trust instead of Mistrust.

Stage 2. Autonomy Vs. Shame and Doubt

During this stage, children are starting to become more mobile. Children are starting to develop a sense of independence and do more things on their own. If they are encouraged they will become more confident and secure, they will also know that they will be able to survive on their own in the world. If the child is overly controlled or criticized, they may start to feel inadequate and like they cannot do things on their own. They may become overly dependent on others and lack self-esteem. I chose this as my analysis because the textbook says, "Child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt", when it comes to this stage. I definitely grew up experiencing autonomy. My mom was always encouraging to try things on my own. She would let me dress myself, play with whatever toys I wanted to play with, and would allow me to help her with "grown up" tasks.

Stage 3. Initiative Vs. Guilt

During this stage, children are asserting themselves more through play and interacting with other children. Children begin to make up games, plan activities, and initiate activities with other children. They can develop a sense of initiative and also feel secure in their ability to make decisions and lead others. If the child is not given this opportunity, they can develop a sense of guilt. During this stage, children ask many questions and if the parent treats the child like they're a nuisance they will be hesitant to ask questions in the future or interact with others. I chose this as my analysis because the textbook says, "Child develops initiative when trying new activities and is not overwhelmed by guilt", when it comes to this stage. I developed Initiative because I was in daycare and was able to interact with children on a regular basis. I was able to play games and make friends that I saw frequently. My mom also played a lot at home with me and my brother. My mom told me that I was a very inquisitive child and she would always try to answer my questions the best that she could.

Stage 4. Industry Vs. Inferiority

During this stage, children start to venture out into society and start having more meaningful relationships with others outside of family. Teachers start to take an important role in the child's life as well as their peer group. They feel compelled to win the approval of others by displaying certain things they are good at that is valued by society. They also begin to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Child must learn skills of the culture or face feelings of incompetence", when it comes to this stage. If the child is encouraged during this stage, they will start to feel confident in their ability to achieve goals and competency. If they are not encouraged, they may feel inferior and doubt their abilities. I completed Industry during this stage because I had a close group of friends growing up that were very supportive and kind. Teachers frequently praised me because I did good on my work and I was well behaved.

Stage 5. Identity Vs. Identity Confusion

This stage is very important because it's the transition from childhood to adulthood. During this stage, children are searching for a sense of personal identity. They are actively exploring their personal beliefs, goals, and values. They are starting to become more independent and looking at their future in terms of relationships, family, careers, etc,. The individual is trying to find out exactly who they are and the role they will play as an adult. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Adolescent must determine sense of self or experience confusion about roles", when it comes to this stage. If they're unable to establish a sense of identity in society they may become confused about what their role in life is. I experienced a lot of identity confusion growing up and I still do to this day. I never really knew what I wanted to do in life and I never really had any "passions". After graduating high school, deciding what I wanted to go to college for was a nightmare. I didn't know what I wanted to do but I felt pressured to go because everyone else was.

Stage 6. Intimacy Vs. Isolation

During this stage, the conflict mainly centers on creating intimate, loving relationships with other individuals. Individuals begin to explore relationships that may lead to long term commitments. Successfully completing this stage can result in in future happy relationships and a sense of safety, commitment, and care within relationships. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption", when it comes to this stage. If this stage is not completed successfully it can lead to loneliness, isolation, and possibly depression. I believe I am in the isolation part of this stage. I have been in a few relationships but I have never felt truly happy, loved, or secure. Growing up, I witnessed my mom become involved in many abusive relationships, whether it was physically or mentally. As I have gotten older, I have found myself in situations that I saw my mom in in the past.

Stage 7. Generativity Vs. Stagnation

During this stage, middle aged individuals are wanting to "make their mark" or be a part of the "bigger picture". This could be raising kids (nurturing), doing something positive for others, or doing something for the community (giving back). Succeeding in this stage can lead the individual to feel accomplished or useful. When an individual fails to find a way to contribute they may feel disconnected, uninvolved, and unproductive. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels personal impoverishment", when it comes to this stage. I have not reached this stage yet but I do hope to have a child at some point that I can raise and encourage them to be a good person. I would also like to maybe become involved in giving back to the community and helping people in need.

Stage 8. Integrity Vs. Despair

This is the final stage of Erikson's development. During this stage, we are able to contemplate our accomplishments and see if we led a successful life or if there was anything lacking. If this stage is completed successfully, the individual will be able to look back on their life with closure and completeness, and they can also accept the fate of death without fear. If the individual feels like their life was unproductive, experience guilt about their past, or did not accomplish certain life goals, they may feel dissatisfied and develop despair. This could lead to a feeling of hopelessness and depression. I chose this analysis because the textbook says, "Elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs over inability to relive life", when it comes to this stage. I have not reached this stage yet but I hope at this point I can look back at my life and have no regrets. I want to do things that make me happy, like travel, and I would like to be married or have been married.
