Almost 200 years later, immigration is still very much a politicized and contentious issue. The no-nothing party, also known as the Republican party, were successful in alienating and pitting the migrants against the natives. To this idea, the current Republican party, perpetuated even more by the incumbent president, is still known to be more hardline in comparison to the Democrats with immigration policy.

At first, the impacts of the immigration were mostly positive, with the bringing of new culture changing up the community of New York. However, with change comes opposition, as Nativism and its various groups took a rise. The anti-immigrant movement led to the decrease in employment chances for immigrants, and the lower native class, causing tensions between society.
