Throughout school, we have always relied on the teacher to tell us everything we need to know in class. That way, we knew that if we take notes and pay attention in class, we would know everything we need to know for the exam. We never had to read textbooks - they were available, but you did not need them to pass. However, I have seen and been told that university is all about independent work, rather than being spoonfed. Getting used to this workload may be my biggest problem.
- Vanessa (Uganda)

In Singapore, I study mainly through writing notes and memorising information. However, I've heard that in the UK, students learn through study groups, so, that will take some getting use to. Also in Singapore, our lecturers are usually available for consultation after each lesson but, in the UK, I've heard that is not the case and students are required to often learn independently.

Denise, Singapore

However, in university, there is more flexibility because you can arrange your own timetable and study what you are interested in. In saying that, you also need to take on more responsibility for your choices.

Seo, South Korea

How we were taught

For about 3 years, i schooled in South Africa. In the school i was in they encouraged student interaction and provided many sources on the topics we were learning. They also adopted a sort of laissez-faire method in which we as students were given some creative leeway in getting the assignment done. Teachers were always telling my parents about how little i participated in classes. This was a stark difference to how i was taught in my home country, Nigeria and that was all too clear when I came back home. Although, they do encourage student participation to some extent, there were minimal group discussions and we mainly listened to the teacher and took down notes.
Titi, Nigeria
