SMART Goals

        1) Within a seven week period I will get the kids to log on to the computer by themselves. -
This goal was created to get the students use to the current teaching practices and techniques. Technology is a big part of school today and so having the kids be able to log on to the computer and go to the web page by themselves will help prepare them for future technology use. All of the kids, but two are now able to get on.
        2) Within a seven week period I will find ways to help stations run more smooth and keep the kids more focused during stations, so they complete all of their work. -
This goal was created based on the Existentialism educational philosophy. During stations, Mrs. Chomanics gives her students a certain amount of time to do their work and if they don't do it, they don't get credit. Mrs. Chomanics does not check in on them throughout station time. She lets the students decide if they are going to do the work or not and they get to deal with the consequences.
         3) Within a seven week period I will spend extra one-on-one time with the ELL (English Language Learner) student to help them clearly understand the assignments. Eventually he/she will be able to better understand the assignments on his/her own. -
This goal was made to engage diverse students in stations. There is an ELL student in Mrs. Chomanics class who is from India. He needs a lot of extra explaining and help reading/ writing in English. Mrs. Chomanics and I started him with twenty extra minutes a day to work on his assignments and then took off time each week. He is now finishing his work with only about five minutes extra in class.

Project Overview

For the project I would go to Thornebrooke Elementary School for two and a half hours every Monday. I would work with Mrs. Chomanics and her kindergarten class. Mrs. Chomanics let me come in during stations and I would run stations two, three and four. Station two was a fun learning activity, station three was a short read/writing activity, and station four was computers. Mrs. Chomanics gave me these stations so I can have a diverse range of experience. Each station was about 15- 20 minutes. I would start off by helping and making sure that the kids in station four can get onto their computer and on the right web-page, then I would go in-between station two and three helping the kids when needed.

Challenges

I have really enjoyed going to Mrs. Chomanics' classroom to help, but there has been some challenges along the way. There were some situations that I did not know how to handle.

1/26/2018- One of the students refused to enter the class room. She just sat on the floor and started to kick and scream when we tried to get her to come in. I did not know what to do to get her to join the class. We ended up having to get the school consular. The lady told me that I should sit there with her and talk to her about why she doesn't want to come in and why she should. I eventually got the girl to come into the classroom and join the class in work. She did well the rest of the class.

1/16/2017- Two of the students got into an argument during class. I didn't know how to solve the issue and make both kids happy. I turned to Mrs. Chomanics and she told me that sometimes you can't make everyone happy. The kids were fighting over a toy, so Mrs. Chomanics took the toy away from them until they can work things out themselves.

2/26/2018- There was a code red at the school, meaning there was a person or multiple people armed in/ around the school. I didn't know what to do, where to go, or how to handle the kids during this kind of situation. Mrs. Chomanics calmly showed me what to do and how to handle the kids. It was a scary situation that I was not prepared for, but everyone is okay.

The impact that student learning had on me was huge. It made me realize that teaching is what I am meant to do. Student learning also gives you hands on experience and teaches you things hat you can not learn from reading a text-book. I gained so much experience and I feel like I am one step closer to being ready to become a teacher.

Reflection of My Experience

During this semester, I have done 20 hours in student learning hours and 20 more hours with after school activities for the school. This experience has been so amazing and has only made me realize how much I want to do this as a career. I am not a morning person, but waking up to go to my classroom and to see the students is the easiest and best thing I do. My experience was hard at times, like when the code red was happening, but I am so grateful for the opportunity. I have changed what I want to be so many times and because of this opportunity I found something to do that makes me extremely happy. Helping the kids and seeing their faces light up when they finally understand something is priceless. Knowing that you where the one who caused kids to learn and grow is such an amazing thing. I have helped my students during this semester with assignments, fun activities, serious tests, and so much more. All of it brought me joy. Every time I went to the classroom, the kids would hug me and say that they missed me. Mrs, Chomanics was an amazing teacher and she is what i aspire to be like as a teacher. She cares so much for her students. She taught me important lessons that everyone should know to become a teacher, things that you can't learn from a textbook. She taught me things that can only be taught with hands on experience and I am so happy so was the teacher I choose as a mentor.
