Video #1: What Is Down Syndrome ?

This video talks about chromosomes and how Down Syndrome is caused. Two ways this disorder can happen is; it can be passed down by the parents or if the child has an abnormal cell division. A key point I took away from this video was, having down syndrome can cause a different face formation. If the parent has this disorder then decided to have a child, this is how it can be passed down. Also, if a woman has a child over the age of 35, tons of health risks come with the baby. Lastly, if a child ends up being born with a partial or a full extra chromosome this can also cause Down Syndrome.

This video highlights the key points of how to treat/talk to people with down syndrome. How they want to be treated is; talk to them like their a normal person, don't baby them, don't always try and do things for them, just be friendly, and have the want to get to know them. One key point I took away from this video was, some people can treat people with Down Syndrome differently because there scared and don't know what it is.

This video highlights kids with Down Syndrome and how school affects them. Students with down syndrome learn a little slower than other students do. They comprehend and take information differently and sometimes their brain needs a little more time to understand what is being taken in. Most kids with down syndrome learn best if they see models. For example, what other kids their age do and say they pick up on and follow along with.

The main reason why I chose this topic is beacuse my younger cousin, Avery has this disability... Down syndrome. She is 10 years old and was born was this condition. Grades kindergarten to 5th grade she was in normal classes and went to school just like every kid her age. Doing this project I learned that music and how you approach people with this disability can help you make a stronger connection with them. What I found quite interesting was, that people with this disability need more time to process certain things being said. They need to take the time to think it through to be able to understand it.

I remember when I was little, my cousin, Avery was thought of as "different," but not to me. My mom would tell me that I would treat Avery as a normal person but with tons of love. I would sing, sleep, dance, and do everything with her... and I still do whenever I see her. The biggest advice I can give is; we are all human, one and the same, so treat people like it!
