The disease I am doing research on is Bacterial Meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is a serious disease that leaves people with an infection and death can happen in a few hours. But, a lot of those diagnosed with meningitis do end up recovering from it, compared to those who do not recover, they can have permanent disabilities such as hearing loss, learning disabilities, and damage to the brain.

The causative agent or at least one of the causative agents is Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Vomiting
Photophobia (eyes being more sensitive to light)
Altered mental status (confusion)

If the medical professional thinks a patient may have meningitis, they will collect a blood sample or cerebrospinal fluid which is the fluid near the spinal cord. That sample will get sent to the lab where they will test the samples to see what specific thing is causing the infection which will help know the doctors on how to treat it.

The doctors can treat meningitis with several different antibiotics and it is important to start the treatment as quick as possible.

Vaccine - There are 4 different types of bacteria that cause meningitis and there is a vaccine for each different one and they are the most effective way to protect against meningitis.
