Based on the reading of Grambrell's (2011) Seven rules of engagement, something that comes back to my mind is my own experience as a reader at school. I totally hated that teachers imposed me some books to read and as I did not want to read them, I created a feeling of disgust with lecture in general. Now that I could understand the 7 strategies proposed by Gambrell I can realize that freedom is one of the most important things at the moment of motivating our students. How can we foster reading habits by imposing books that our students do not want to read? If we want to develop motivation in our students we should be able to give them a variety of texts to read, alternatives of outcome, different genres and topics, etc. so as they will be truly interested in reading by their own.

Nowadays, the value and importance of reading has diminish considerably due to the new digital competition that EFL classrooms are facing. Students tend to associate reading with a tedious activity since during their school years they haven’t received the appropriate approach to fully appreciate the value of this action. As EFL teachers, it is vital that we grasp suitable means to arouse our students’ motivation in relation to reading, specially in a society in which less people develop functional literacy.

Our students struggle every day with the perception that they have about their performances, so it’s our role as teachers to give support, confidence and hope to our students as a motivating factor for them to keep working in this ability.
