I told her I was going to be apprenticed to Joe, I believed; and I enlarged upon my knowing nothing and wanting to know everything, in the hope that she might offer some help towards that desirable end. But she did not; on the contrary, she seemed to prefer my being ignorant. Neither did she ever give me any money or anything but my daily dinner—nor even stipulate that I should be paid for my services.” (230 on iPad) Pip has been going to Miss Havisham’s for enough time where he realizes that he is not gaining anything from helping Miss Havisham. He realizes that he is not getting paid or provided with any resources to further his life.

Liz LeBeau

This is showing how nervous Joe is and neither Pip or Joe are used to being around wealthy people and don’t know how to act. I am afraid I was ashamed of the dear good fellow—I know I was ashamed of him—when I saw that Estella stood at the back of Miss Havisham's chair, and that her eyes laughed mischievously“ (120). This markes the realization by Pip that Joe is extremely nervous and that Joe is embarrassing him right now. It shows Pips realization the Joe isn’t perfect and kind of brings Joe as a person in Pips eyes down to ground level seeing him nervous and being embarrassed like this.

-Trevor

Pip expresses that, “It was a trial to my feelings, on the next day but one, to see Joe arraying himself in his Sunday clothes to accompany me to Miss Havisham’s. However, as he thought his court-suit necessary to the occasion, it was not for me to tell him that he looked far better in his working dress; the rather, because I knew he made himself so dreadfully uncomfortable entirely on my account,” (11). Pip believes that Joe should just be himself instead of dressing up, especially on his behalf. This indicates that Pip is fond of the man Joe is and doesn’t believe why someone else may not like him. This thought slowly dwindles as the chapter progresses, and Pip begins to see how life may end up for him. He realizes that Joe is doing the best he can, and Pip doesn’t want Joe’s best to be what his own best looks like in the future. - Simran.

Pip is starting to get an idea or now starting to understand the differences of the people he deals with in his life and their large differences. His step brother/dad isn’t used to being around rich people so he doesn’t feel comfortable he behaves like he’s in the presence of great people and gets nervous about having to be around these people causing Pip to be a little embarrassed by how his family acted towards them. This is important because it shows what kind of situations Pip has to deal with. -Alyssa

The more I made faces and gestures to him to do it, the more confidential, argumentative, and polite he persisted in being to me” (156).

When Pip tries to get Joe to have a real conversation with Miss Havisham, we see how his world has been divided. He used to be so admiring of Joe, and now he feels like he needs to teach him manners and the proper way to behave. This shows how Miss Havisham and the manor has influenced Pip’s outlook. Pip feels embarrassed of his former “common” life. His attempt at making Joe speak directly to Miss Havisham displays his desire to be less common and become more like a gentleman.
-Ellie Shuert

He and Joe have a special bond, yet now that has changed and Pip is and will be in times going forward resentful of Joe’s commonness. The resent can transfer into blacksmithing, that Pip is supposed to apprentice in, and now make common life a bad thing for Pip.

“I could hardly have imagined dear old Joe looking so unlike himself or so like some extraordinary bird, standing, as he did, speechless, with his tuft of feathers ruffled, and his mouth open as if he wanted a worm.” (274)

Pip exclaims that Joe’s actions when Ms. Havisham speaks to him are abnormal. He uses phrases such as “extraordinary bird,” “speechless,” “with his tuft of feathers ruffled.” Giving off the idea that he was nervous or didn’t know how to act, just as a bird would if they had seen a predator. This goes deeper into the idea that Joe was intimidated and possibly uncertain on how to feel about Ms. Havisham, she was described as an unsettling, and uneasy person to look at. Therefor this quote is showing Joe in vulnerable state of uncertainty of his feelings. Which I find important to the book, because Joe seems to always be easy going and childish and this quote shows that he can tense up and have the same feelings as others.

-Isabella Ciccone

“It was quite in vain for me to endeavour to make him sensible that he ought to speak to Miss Havisham. The more I made faces and gestures to him to do it, the more confidential, argumentative, and polite he persisted in being to me"(119). Pip has already started knowing that he is lesser then them and that the "wealthy" treat the commoners differently, but this is the first time that Pip has been embarrassed of joe and the way he acts, he doesn't understand why joe can't talk to Mrs havisham because maybe joe feels like he's much lesser then mrs havisham and doesn't deserve or know how to talk to her. This most likely greatly affects pip because Pips been staying and getting to know these crazy people for long periods of time now and here's this man he looks up to not being able to carry a conversation. It's really the first time that pip is ashamed of joe. -maddie

"I could hardly have imagined dear old Joe looking so unlike himself or so like some extraordinary bird, standing as he did, speechless, with his tuft of feathers ruffled, and his mouth opened as if he wanted a worm,"(ch 13). This quote is indicating how Joe felt and how he was helpless and agitated by ms havishams wording on words and questions. This leads us to believe he was very nervous and not very used to meeting people of prestige. He lost his cool and also couldn't answer to ms havishams directly. He kept using pip as a middle man to talk to ms havisham. It was very i unlike him and pip noticed that. It was an experience pip never went through and was awkard for them all - Aamir

“It was ten o’clock at night before we ventured to creep in again, and then she asked Joe why he had not married a Negress slave at once? Joe offered no answer, poor fellow, but stood feeling his whiskers and looking dejectedly at me, as if he thought it really might have been a better speculation.”(pg234) Mrs. Joe is being extremely insecure and is putting her negative emotions onto those she cares about. But while doing so she pushes them away and makes them want to leave her even more. This is extremely important because it outlines how extremely fragile the relationship is between Mr. Joe, Mrs. Joe, and pip. And with Joe contemplating if he should leave, it might lead to him actually going on his own. And that would completely change the dynamic of the plot with pip having to now deal with a divorce and the new relationships he would have to form and adjust to.

-Emmanuel Thompson
