Chatroom's and instant messaging are good for talking to friends and family... although you have to think before you send. The persons your talking to, even family, may not be the person you think! If you don't give out personal details, they are very useful!

I think chat rooms are good for contacting family and real world friends. The bad side is that you often don't know for sure who your talking to!
