A treatment is the anatomy of a music video in conjunction with the song. It is a process where the majority of a song's elements i.e. lyrics, can be broken down into visual segments. A treatment is the representation of a directors intentions and ideas which helps the director to analyse potential subtexts in a song.

What is the desired goal?

My desired goal is to aim for my music video to run for the entirety of the song, however, this may be altered and I may shorten the intro due to how long it is. I will have a minimum budget of £5, however, I do not think this will be necessary as I have access to a majority of props I would like to include. Due to the fact I am making a music video based on the rock genre, I am aiming for an alternative audience to view it. This particular audience consists of young adults and teenagers (16-25 year olds) of any gender, ethnicity etc. Another representation of my target audience are usually people who are portrayed as the working class, the underclass and a minority of the skilled working class. I used popular audience theorists 'Blumler & Katz' and their theory of the '4 C's' which determines my audience as part of the category of "The Strugglers" who are young adults and teenagers who are known for their anarchic behaviour (smoking, binge-drinking, violence etc) and their reason behind listening to rock music; to escape everyday life/routine. A representation of the physical appearance of my audience is stereotypically alternative i.e. piercings, messy and coloured hair, tattoos etc. I am aiming my music video at the 16-25 age range as these are seen as the most "vulnerable" (despite their behaviours) to issues such as drug use because of being peer pressured, their social groups are doing it too etc. According to websites such as 'The Recovery Village' it is statistically more likely for males to take drugs and develop an addiction - 12% of American males aged 12+ took illegal drugs and 7.3% of females from the same age group do too. These statistics are roughly the same in the UK too, and has given me the idea to mainly use males as actors for my music video to highlight this fact.

Due to the meaning I have interpreted from the song, I would like the outcome/core message for my music video to be spreading awareness for the consequences of drugs. Although originally the music video for RHCP's 'Can't Stop' is rather fun and of a performative nature, I would like to change that and make a video more conceptual and dark themed with a few hints of RHCP's traditional style along with performative elements. I also have a few ideas on adding animated elements as during my music video director research, I was really inspired by David Wilson's use of merging live action with animation and I believe it will appeal to my audience as it is adding a "fantasy" aspect which will help them escape from reality. Overall, I would like the main message for my music video to be based around changing my target audiences opinions and beliefs on drugs and to show there are consequences from taking them. Hopefully, by spreading this type of message, my audiences desire to be entertained and informed will be met.

What is the approach?

The approach for my music video is to show the effect and the consequences of drugs to show how a simple act can spiral and make a person lose control. Throughout the duration of my video, I want my audience to feel as if they are part of the turmoil the characters are going through - effectively creating a sense of a mode of address. This is to put them in a mind-set that they have no control over what happened next and start to feel vulnerable due to the lack of control and knowledge. I would like to switch between concept and performative shots as that will conform to a majority of Red Hot Chili Peppers music videos and will maintain the identity of the band. The main purpose is to draw the audience in and make them realise the ultimate danger of drugs and how quickly it can spiral from having fun to going out of control (a "bad trip"). For editing, I need to use fast-paced transitions, such as jump-cuts, between scenes as the song is upbeat and fast. I am also thinking of changing the colour contrast to grey scale (black and white) so when I incorporate animation into my video, it will add colour and create a distorted yet disturbing effect.
