A pattern that appears through the book is whenever Banks meet old acquaintances he takes a dislike to them in his head, but is polite to them in other terms. "It was only when I heard of his death just over a year later that I somewhat felt guilty I had not been warmer towards him that evening at Dorchester"(30).

Although she has had a tough life she is able to accept the life she has and make the most out of it.

"I kick through the trash and the rocks and the dirt. Something shines silver in the dark, and then I see other shining things-pieces of glass and metal. There is the red plastic eye of a taillight. The shattered lump of a side mirror. A license plate, dented and nearly folded in half" (64).

He's given up much of his personal life to help support his mother and 13-year-old sister Mary. His responsibility is displayed when it says, "Like just about every other day, I came home from school and then went straight to work. Later, I'd go home, knock out some homework, and then go to bed" (8).

During the Summer when she was fifteen years old, her father tore her family apart when he announced he was leaving to be with another woman. This destroyed their family, but Cadence proved to be tough, "'Don't cause a scene,' she [the mother] told me. 'Breathe and sit up.' I did what she asked"(33). Cadence and her mother don't let the affair affect them for long, "Mummy and I tilted our square chins high as Dad drove down the hill"(34).
