Religion and Education are both secondary socializing agents. Socialization is the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies of society. Whether one is a Christian, Muslim or Hindu, the belief in someone or something divine plays a role in restricting social behavior. The two are often combined in order to be more effective. For example, a pupil attending a catholic primary school is subject to attend first communion classes at a certain age. Recieving the first Sacrament of the Eucharist is indeed sacred and thus students are expected to be modest, humble and god fearing to say the least. Religious teachings within the school curriculum are intended to instill the rights and wrongs that society goes by and to make students conscious of their wrong doing, and in doing so, create and obedient classroom.
-April 11th

In the region, the churches were the first to offer higher learning. During slavery, a phenomenon that many Caribbean people had to endure, education was not offered. This was because time spent in classrooms would be time lost on the plantation. Also, educating the masses would have meant opening doors for upheaval and revolutions. Instead, according to Karl Marx, religion was the opium of the people. It was used by the poor to give them hope and meaning to their life and to keep them oppressed and alienated.

Regional Importance

A problem of regional importance is class inequality. This can be blamed entirely on colonization, where the metropole countries made the countries of the Caribbean their colonies. Education in this period was only offered to the plantation owner’s children and the few that were of both black and white decent. Problems perpetuated into society even after colonization was over as the rewards of society were geared to the upper class. Unequal opportunity in the education system is the root as only the privileged were allowed to attend the prestige schools. Although years have passed and efforts have been made to make society a more meritocratic one, in contemporary society, class inequality still exists to some extent
-April 20th

During this semester, this course has opened my mind to much that I wasn’t aware of. The information and resources given were extensive and indeed the knowledge will be an asset in the future. I chose this topic specifically because it is relevant to many, if not all Caribbean society. Many could relate to religious teachings’ guiding their lifestyles or being a victim of social inequality because of their class. To conclude, Religion and Education are both very effective socialization agents regardless of whether the impacts are positive or negative.
-April 21st
