Constantly being watched (Morgan)

One way that the book 1984 relates to real life is that there are ways that people are constantly being watched. From the book its the cameras and television screens, and in today's society it is the constant cameras recording us and the fact that we cannot do most things in public without someone seeing it. This is shown in the book when it says, "It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time." This is relevant to real life, because there are constant cameras everywhere and they have to resources to have them pick up sound- so we really are on recording a lot. This is one way the book 1984 relates to real life.

In the book 1984 the government or big brother, censors what the people are able to see. Today, North Korea's government censors what their citizens are able to see in a similar fashion. All around people in 1984 see positive depictions of the government and see nothing but happy, smiling people. Today, in North Korea, it is much the same as the only thing people are allowed to think are happy thoughts and good things about the government. A quote from 1984 that supports this is, "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength." This quote appears after the 2 minutes of hate that appear on the screen to keep the people thinking that they are being protected for their own benefit.

Like the book, technology is changing how view their privacy (Morgan)

Another way the book 1984 is relevant to the book 1984, is that is has changed how citizens view their own privacy. This is shown in the book when it says, "You had to live--did live, from habit that became instinct--in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized." This is a good example because it is saying how these citizens have learned to live with the fact that they ARE constantly being recorded and taped, and that is relevant in today's society. This is also a relevant thing today, because we know and have accepted the fact that most places are sure to have cameras and recorders with them, so they are constantly being watched.

In the book 1984 the government has TV screens in every house and every public or private place. In the world today people with access to your phones and computers can access whatever they want to on your screen. While the screen tapping is different, it is very much related. In the book Winston says, "They can tap into your screen whenever," which shows that Big Brother randomly taps into the screens of people in their homes. Winston has a room that is L-shaped which allows him to be able to not be seen by the screen sometimes.

Orwell displays different techniques their government used to control the public and what they think. Through peer group pressure, one of the groups that is in tandem with their government is the Anti-Sex league. This group of people show and enforce the idea that sex is purely not meant for pleasure. Besides that, they diminish drinking and smoking too, because they shouldn't be used for pleasure either. These activities aren't mean to be leisurely, leading to a lot of the materials being rationed in amounts where people cannot have an abundance of them.

Orwell shows the use of propaganda in 1984 through the use of telescreens. The news that the telescreens display a government that is both efficient and effective, and in addition to that, they often air militaristic music to bring out feelings and emotions of patriotism to both their citizens and general audience. This leads to citizens becoming inundated, becoming overwhelmed with all of the information that the telescreens are relaying. As a result of abundance of information being thrown at their audience at once, they are unable to formalize arguments against the government in any act of rebellion, giving the government complete and utter control.
