One rainy morning, Kabir one of my student came to school looking sad—his shoes were soaked, and he didn’t want to join circle time. Aanya, a classmate who usually sat beside him, noticed his discomfort. Without prompting, she took off her own raincoat and gently placed it over his lap, saying, “You can use mine. I’m dry now.” She then invited him to sit with her and quietly whispered, “I’ll help you feel better.”

I observed this moment and later praised Aanya’s empathy during group reflection. Kabir gradually smiled and participated in the day’s activities, clearly comforted by her kindness.

Instead of teasing or ignoring her, he paused his own activity, knelt down, and patiently helped her. The struggling child felt supported, and several other students started offering small acts of help to each other throughout the day. This simple gesture demonstrated empathy and social awareness, creating a more caring and cooperative classroom environment where children felt safe to ask for help and support one another.

Definitely! Here’s a real-life-inspired example of a student demonstrating social awareness in the classroom:

Example: Emily and the New Student

A new student, Mia, joined Emily’s kindergarten class mid-year. Mia was quiet and seemed shy, often sitting alone during recess and lunchtime. Emily noticed this and remembered how she felt on her first day at school.

One day, Emily invited Mia to join her and her friends for a game during recess. She said, “Hey Mia, want to play with us?” Mia smiled and accepted the invitation.

Throughout the week, Emily checked in with Mia, making sure she felt included and comfortable. She even helped Mia understand classroom routines when she looked confused.

What Emily showed:

Empathy: Recognizing Mia’s feelings of loneliness and wanting to help.

Understanding: Being aware of social cues and Mia’s need for support.

Action: Taking steps to include Mia and make her feel welcome.

Impact on the classroom:

Mia felt safer and happier, participating more.

The classroom atmosphere became more inclusive and kind.

Other students were inspired to be more welcoming and thoughtful too.

Moments like these highlight how social awareness can create a warm, supportive learning environment.

I once observed a moment of social awareness in my classroom when a child noticed that their classmate was feeling upset after not being able to complete an activity. The child went up to them, gently comforted them, and offered to share their materials so they could try again. This small gesture showed empathy and an understanding of the other child’s feelings.

Such moments help create a caring and supportive classroom environment. When children notice and respond to the emotions of their peers, it encourages kindness, cooperation, and a sense of belonging among students.

One incident I remember, when all children went for an outdoor activity to gather pebbles/stones in their baskets, one child had less pebbles in his basket. So he felt upset, and his classmates tried to know the reason of his sadness and share few stones with him At the end, they together create something with sones and worked in collaboration. Here, the students were being empathetic and tried to validate the emotion and provide emotional support to the disturbed child, which demonstrates a perfect example of social awareness.

A memorable example of social awareness in my classroom was when one of my students returned to school after losing her eye in an accident. She was hesitant and anxious about coming back because she feared that her classmates might mock or exclude her. However, when she finally returned, her peers surprised everyone by warmly welcoming her and hugging her instead of reacting negatively. Their empathetic response showed that they understood her feelings and chose kindness and acceptance, which helped her feel safe, supported, and confident again, making the classroom a more caring and inclusive environment.

As he was not much close to that boy he has informed one of his close friend and suggested er to go and talk to her, he may be need some support and would hesitate to share with him. A few moment later he saw that both of them were laughing and running in the ground. This incidence shows that empathetic student don't only understand need to support when he/she is emotionally hurt but the also know who can do this better
