The few art classes that I had the pleasure of being in lit my creativity spark immensely and I was suddenly obsessed with the idea of taking examples of the art pieces the class were shown and discovering ways to make them better; more unique, more colourful, and more outstanding from the rest. I then took this drive to hair. Taking the fun, unique styles and different types of braids I would find on the internet or YouTube, I would often find myself staying up till the early morning trying to master the art of each. Throughout art class, I also learned all about colours. The ones that mix well, the colours that accent each other the nicest, and the ones that don’t will be very useful when having to perform tasks such as dying hair. Art class continues to be my favourite class, and until my dream career is reality, it’s a perfect example of what makes me happy on my road to my destiny.

I was given the opportunity during this summer to work at a hair and nail salon for 5 weeks, and many of which ended up being some of the best of my life. The amazing opportunity I was given allowed me to get a feel for the salon atmosphere and the pace of the work. I was especially grateful for the chance to work in the salon atmosphere because it’s easy to get your hair done and think hairdressing is something you want to pursue, but to actually get the chance to see how everything works from the employee’s point of view changes your perspective of the job. For example, I got to learn the hardships of the job like working every Saturday, standing on your feet for long hours, and potentially having customers that aren’t your favourite (and you can’t cut all their hair off, no matter how badly you want to). More importantly though, throughout this job I learned that every job has its downfalls, but when you have a passion for what you do, work suddenly begins to feel less like work and more like an exciting place to go everyday.

With the accessibility of styling their hair in new, fun ways and trying out unique and exciting makeup techniques, I have learned that my passion never has a limit to what I can and can't do. Hairdressing, (and esthetics) is a career that holds so much creativity, there will always be a new trend or style awaiting me. My friends love when I do their hair in ways they could never, and it makes me happy knowing I can make them feel more confident through their hairstyle regardless if it’s something as simple as using a curling iron. My personal legend is to become a hairdresser and to open my own salon. The video below talks about finding your grit. Hairdressing and owning my own salon is my grit. This long term goal that I have a very strong passion towards is something I plan to work towards until it's accomplished and even after, I will continue to strive to be better.
