I realize that each student has unique abilities and strengths and only ask that you try your very best each day!

Students will use the free app REMIND as one mode of communication regarding all homework assignment.
Parents are able to sign up for Remind as well.
Parents will also receive information about signing up for Class Tag for information about games, field trips and other school announcements.
You will receive specific detail on the first day of school; please check your emails!!

Respectful: Treat others as you would want to be treated. Use classroom appropriate language, gestures and body language. Listen attentively when others are talking. Wait patiently for your turn to speak and face the speaker. Respect the yourself, this class, the teacher and this school.

Responsible: Come prepared daily by bringing all materials to class. This includes your homework, classwork and notes. Complete all homework and reading assignments before you come to class.

Resourceful: Do not simply rely on the teacher's brain. In addition to the guidance that teachers give, you must learn to depend on yourself by using your notes to study, study with a peer, watch tutorial videos to help you as well as READ your textbook and other resources provided to you.

Resilient: Find the positive and celebrate it. Work on areas of weakness. Practice self-control. Learn to adjust to change. Be patient

Objectives

This is a reading and writing intensive course; students will be required to integrate communication, language mechanics, and vocabulary skills with higher level critical thinking and synthesizing. Students will master the following skills:

Literature: Identify and analyze literary elements and apply critical thinking skills to analyze figurative language, character development, elements of plot, and themes in a variety of literary genres.

Reading: Apply strategies for comprehension and analysis of a variety of reading selections; use context clues, analogies, synonyms, antonyms, and structural analysis to determine the meaning of vocabulary words.

Composition: Utilize effective writing skills to communicate information in a variety of modes including expository, narrative, persuasive, and analytical; use organizational devices for prewriting activities; effectively use transitional words and phrases; proofread and edit.

Language Mechanics: Demonstrate understanding of writing conventions by employing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage.

Technology: Effectively utilize the internet, educational websites, computer programs, and software to complete and enhance assignments and conduct research including Webquests, PowerPoint, word processing, and graphics.

Assessment

Grades will be given based on the following criteria: Completion and accuracy of assigned work, tests and quizzes, homework, projects, and participation. Accommodations

93 – 100 (A) 92-85 (B) 84 – 77 (C) 75 – 70 (D) 69 or below (F)

Attendance and Makeup Work

Daily attendance is critical to the successful completion of this course. Each unexcused absence will result in the recording of a “0” grade in the grade book and will be calculated into the overall percentage of the final grade. Excused absences will also result in a “0” grade and will remain in the grade book until the student successfully completes the missing assignment. It is the student’s responsibility to refer to the course calendar, or the teacher’s Youtube channel, or consult with their student buddy.

Students who score below 70 on a test will have the option to retaking it after school as schedule by the teacher.

Tardies: Students must be inside the classroom when the bell rings. If students are tardy three or more times, parents will be notified. A referral will be written after four tardies.

Homework (Refer to the class website and study buddy for assignments and due dates.)

Homework will be assigned on a regular basis with a clear and reasonable date designated for completion. Failure to complete homework assignments in a timely manner will result in a lower grade for the course. Students are encouraged to sign up for Remind. Remind is a free app which is used to remind students of assignments and announcements. Students and Parents can also use this to communicate with the teacher.

Classroom Conduct

In order to provide the best possible learning environment, it is expected that students conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful and considerate of others. The following behavior will not be tolerated: profanity, bullying or harassment of peers, sleeping, and any behavior which adversely affects the teaching or learning process. Consequences for infractions may include parent contact, detention, and referral to an administrator or counselor.

Passes

No passes will be used 15 minutes after the bell rings to begin class or 15 minutes before the bell rings for dismissal.

Rules

Be prepared – you must have a pen, folder, journal, textbook and binder every day.
Be on time – you must be in your seat, quiet, and prepared to learn and participate.
Be on task at all times – you must concentrate and complete your work in the time given.
Be respectful (i.e. keep your hands and feet to yourself, no yelling, insulting or using profanity).
Be proactive follow any directions immediately.

Expected Behaviors

All assignments are to be completed and handed in on time.
You must be prepared with all required materials at all times.
It is your responsibility to be in school every day then you will have the potential to succeed.
Respect all people, at all times, by making positive comments and then giving constructive criticism.
Stay on task at all times, listen during discussions, and participate during group work.

Consequences

First offense: warning

Second offense: Student /Teacher Conference

Thrid offense: Call home

Fourth offense: lunch/ afterschool dentention

Fifth offense:Referal to grade level administration

RACE METHOD

What is a flipped class?

A flipped classroom is one where students are introduced to content at home, and practice working through it at school.

Students will watch an assigned video from my YouTube channel, take notes in their spiral notebook, and complete their pre-work assignment before coming to class.

An easier way to think of it is students will take class notes at home and complete their homework at school.

It also has the side benefit of allowing students to pause, rewind, Google terms, rewatch, etc., as well as creating a ready-made library for student review, make-up work, etc.
