Dad's Funeral

Wes was so young he did not quite understand what it meant that his father was dead. He just saw family and friends coming and going. the funeral was held at the church where Wes's parents where married but when Wes was escorted to the coffin he asked his fathers dead corpse "Daddy, are you going to come with us"?

Growing up with family

Moore describes how at three years old, he hit his sister Nikki while they were playing. In his recollection, he runs to his room, afraid of his mother’s response, when he hears his father’s soothing voice attempt to calm her. Moore describes how his mother immigrated at age three to the United States from Jamaica and how she struggled to make a better life for herself. Moore recalls how his father came to his room after the incident with his sister and gave him advice that he would always remember. Moore admits he has only two memories of his father: the memory just described and the memory of his father dying in front of him.

Meeting His Father

Wes was 6 years old and headed to his Grandmother's house so his Mother, Mary, could go hang out with friends. As he was running to play with the bunny under the kitchen sink he finds a man that he has never seen before with a strong sent of whisky coming off him. This strange man started hitting on Wes's mother when Mary said "Wes, meet your father" dropping the bomb shell on him that his father was a drunk.

First Time Arrested

Wes was playing football with his friends Woody and "white boy" until they invited another group to play with them. The kids in the group tell Wes to not be so aggressive but that only makes him more aggressive. Eventually, one of the kids punches him, so he goes inside and grabs a knife. But when he goes outside, he doesn't realize that the cops have arrived, so he is tackled by them and arrested. When he gets to the police station, he has to call Tony's father to bail him out.

Joy threatens military school

As Wes's grades continue to decrease, Joy threatens to send him to military school. Wes doesn't believe that his mom will send him to military school because he is from a Caribbean household in which boys are given everything. On top of that, his mom doesn't believe in violence, so it would go against her ideals to send him to military school.

school v. home life baseball game

Wes's uncle, Howard, recently decided that being a doctor was not for him and moved over to the Bronx. He invited kids from Wes's school and home life but things didn't go well. the kids often made fun of each other and trash-talking each other and within fifteen minutes a fight broke out. this continued til the fourth inning when the game stopped. Wes said himself that he was "becoming too "rich" for the kids from the neighborhood and too "poor" for the kids at school." he then talked down to himself.

Violence and Drugs

As Moore and Justin leave for home, Moore talks about the laws of the street: never look someone in the eyes, never smile, and always be aware of the whereabouts of police and drug dealers. As they discuss Riverdale, Moore muses on how out of place he feels and admits that he tries hard to conceal the fact that his family is far poorer than the families of other kids. On one occasion, Moore's Uncle Howard suggests that he invite some friends over to play baseball in the park, reasoning that this might help Moore feel less like he is living in two "mutually exclusive worlds" as opposed to going to play in the other students' neighborhoods. A fight breaks out.

Finding drugs

Wes shows Woody some marijuana he found in his mother's room, and the two of them decide to use it along with some older kids. Wes is told he is staring at a garbage can when he starts eyeing a female across the street while the group smokes, drinks malt liquor, and pauses for Chinese food. Wes attempts to play it casual when he gets home, but Mary and her boyfriend both know he's been drinking. Mary wishes that his queasy feeling will discourage him from drinking, but Wes still enjoys the feeling of being high. He makes the decision to put on a headset and earn some cash.

They move to the Bronx

After Wes's father died his mother fell into depression and was struggling to keep herself and her children afloat so she asks “Mom, if it’s still all right, I think we need to move up there. I can’t do this alone anymore,” (Moore 37)? They moved to the Bronx where Wes realized he doesn't fit in with the kids at school and he doesn't fit in with the kids in the hood. Wes was introduced to crack, gangs, and violence but he has his family to help him through.

the headset

One Saturday, Wes sees a boy wearing a cool headset, and he approaches the boy and asks where he can get one. The boy explains that Wes can get paid to wear a headset and watch out for police. While Wes knows that if he agrees, he’d be working for drug dealers, he rationalizes that he wouldn’t be actually selling drugs.

Tony Beats Wes Up

Tony was over at Wes and Mary's home for the first time in a while and saw how Wes's room was covered in Nike's each pair being fresher than the last. Tony wanted to know how Wes got the money for the shoes but Wes lied and said he got the money from DJing because his mother has been believing the lie. Tony began beating on Wes when he wouldn't let go of the DJ lie but Mary came out and got Tony off of Wes.

Wes moves to Dundee village

Wes and his family move to a neighborhood called Dundee village. this is a nicer nieghborhood then his last one but drugs are still a big problem here. these houses are uniform and are basically all the same. even though the houses are the same, the people who live there are very diverse with a wide variety fo jobs.

Issues arise

Tony who had been in the drug business for some time had been shot in a drug deal gone wrong. This affected Wes as his brother was now in the hospital. This caused him to have to repeat 6th grade. This worries Mary as she thinks that Wes is following the same path as Tony.

Mary finds Wes's drugs

Tony and Wes fight because Tony doesn't want Wes to get into the life that he is involved in. Mary finds them fighting and learns that Wes is in the drug business. She searches through his things and finds $4000 worth of drugs. She takes the drugs and flushes them down the toilet. Wes finds out and gets pissed at his mom and so he now hides all of his drugs at his girlfriend's house.

Mary Flushes the Drugs

Mary started to not believe Wes's DJ lies so she searched Wes's room while he was at school and found shoe boxes of drugs. Mary flushed all the drugs down the toilet till the water ran clean and then put the boxes back in Wes's room. When he got home and saw his drugs where gone he yelled at his mother about the $4,000 she just threw away but she didn't care. I believe Wes is mostly to blame for him joining the drug game but I also believe Tony and Marry had a large roll to play since they raised him.

Mary sees through the lies

after Wes was beat up by Tony she is pretty suspicious about the whole DJ charade and decides to investigate Wes's room. when she does she finds some light shoe boxes under his bed and when she opens them she sees four thousand worth of drugs. she then decides to flush the drugs down the toilet.

i think the oen to blame is both tony and Wes. i say this becuase one Tony set a really bad example to Wes and Wes si also at fault because he decided to hand htese frugs out and decided to go into hte business.

Who is to blame?

I think that it is a combination of Tony, the neighborhood, Mary, and his friends because all of them influenced him in what they are doing. Tony is a drug dealer, his friends are in the drug business, the neighborhood is overrun with drugs, and Mary is ignoring everything that he is doing.

Joy sends Wes to military school

Joy finally breaks and sends Wes to military school because he gets academic and disciplinary prohibitions. The next day, he accidentally hits Shani and splits her lip. In response, Joy slaps Wes and for a moment, it appears that Wes might hit her back. Joy eventually breaks down in tears and soon sends Wes to military school in Valley Forge.

Wes's tried to escape from military school

Wes at the end of his first day was offered a way to escape through the train station near the military school. he tried to take this route at the end of the night but when he approached the forest he got "lost" but in reality was tricked and his commander was waiting in the bushes and then he was taken to his officer's office to get punished but in reality, he was just there to call his mother about the school and her sacrifices.

Wes had been at the school for 4 days and had tried to escape 4 times in these days. Sergeant Austin told Wes "you don’t want to be here, and quite honestly, we don’t want you here, so I have drawn you a map of how to get to the train station" Wes took this map and escaped a 12 pm that night only to find out the map was fake and was only going to lead him into the woods to get lost. The sergeants saw in Wes's eyes that they were going to lose him if they didn't give him something so they allowed him a 5-minute call with his mother. On this call, Wes begged his mother to let him come home and she told him no because of the sacrifices everyone has made for him to be there.

Wes got arrested

Wes and his friend Shea were out spray painting and they both heard sirens and started running. They don't get too far before the police have both their hands on the boys and they are patting them down and checking them. They are both put in the back of the cops car and then the cop gives them both a lecture to stay out of trouble because they are too young to be in trouble like this. They were let go of and less than a week later he was back on the streets spray painting.

Wes was cheating on his girlfriend and afterwords her "cousin" found out and beat Wes up. after he was beat up he went inide to go grab his gun and chased after the "cousin" with some of his boys. he repeatly shot at him and once he did he ran home and ignored his mother to go clean himself and put the gun into a turtles tank under its sand. he was then arrested by a bunch of cops who ran into the house after Wes.

Wes shot someone

Wes met this thick girl on the bus and asked her for her number. They started seeing each other and Wes got her pregnant but that didn't stop Wes from sleeping with other people. he was sleeping with a girl who wasn't his baby mama and she asked him to walk her out. when they made it out the girl's boyfriend Ray was waiting outside for her and they started fighting. When Wes went to go back inside Ray grabbed him and started beating him. Wes went back inside his house grabbed a gun and ran back outside. one of Wes's boys spotted him and helped him look for Ray. Wes and his boy found Ray and chased him down the street where they finally shot him and ran in opposite directions. wes was grabbed by the police a couple of minutes later at his home where witnesses told on him.

Wes has dropped out of school and is selling drugs full-time. One day, a suspicious man approaches Wes, asking for drugs. Wes turns the man away at first but then decides to take a chance. However, the man is an undercover cop, and Wes is arrested again.

racist encounter

after "TAPS" Wes and Dalio decided to go get strombolis from a local pizza place. thye were walking over to the resturant when a car with Colonel Bose's son stopped by them that made some rude remarks to the both of them. they thought ntohing of it and kept on going til another car sped past them almost hitting them twice. thats when Wes gets hit in the head by a rock and the assaliants scream "go home n-word" so they decided to cut through the woods to get abck to the school before they could get hit again. they return back to school through the woods Wes tried to escape from at the beginning of his journey.

Wes stays in the military

After Wes graduates from Valley Forge, he is heavily recruited to play basketball for major universities. Wes is thinking that his dream of the NBA is coming true. But the more college visits he goes on, he realizes that everyone involved is trying to take the easy way out of things, and he refuses to take the easy way out. So after this realization, Wes decides to become a paratrooper and stay in the military.

higher in the skys

In the plane, Moore looks at the other paratrooper trainees around him. For some of them it is their first time jumping out of one. Moore has recently been selected as the regimental commander for the Cadets. The Black Hats yell at him to prepare, and Moore flings himself into the air, flailing in the long three seconds before his parachute opens. Suddenly, he is lifted up by his parachute, and is overwhelmed by feelings of peace and gratitude.
