Going on field trips has been a tradition in schools for many years. In recent years field trips have been less accessible to schools and students for many reasons, mainly cost and the liability of taking students off campus. Field trips are great to use as an educational tool to go along with the curriculum being taught in the classroom. They provide an experience of a lifetime for some students and can form how a student learns about these subjects in school. Schools are sending students on field trips less and less because of the cost of each field trip. When teachers are able to take their class on a field trip they find the best and most educational experience for their students that aligns with what they are teaching.

Virtual field trips empower teachers, librarians and administration to create opportunities for their students to explore the world outside the walls of a school

Students can explore questions or ideas that they cannot experience from a textbook

Virtual field trips have a fee, but this fee is significantly less than the cost field trips that require traveling

VFT removes barriers between the classroom and the far away resources

VFT allows students to gain knowledge based on experience without the risks of standard field visits (i.e. travel, misbehavior)

• Visit the Fossil Hall exhibit on the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
• In a 3rd grade classroom and a full lesson on Fossils, students would be given the opportunity to interact with all the displays of the Fossil Hall. Throughout the virtual field trip, students would be recording observations and answering questions on a provided template.
• In our mini lesson, class will visit one display and answer questions on a provided recording sheet.
