with 2/3 subtract 2/6 you have to find the lowest comman denominator but with 2/6 - 3/6 you only have to do 2-3 which

Then you have to multiply by how you got your lowest common denominator. Next you would have to subtract and then get your answer. But when you have a common fraction all you have to do is subtract right then and there. 

EX:
3/4 -3/8 now you would do 3/4 X 2/2 =6/8 Then you would do 6/8 - 3/8 = 3/8
