1. Transparency is important, aswell as freedom of expression. To be taken in account, and to feel to liberty of saying their opinion. I'm not an expert, but I believe honesty is necessary to understand all the points of view in order to solve an ethical issue.
2. Bioethically speaking, I don't think is okay to hide information to the population. Just like when a patient is sick and he/she must understand the possible scenarios, the people must understand the discoveries scientists find.
3. At some point, I consider it is justified. In some countries they took these measurements, and they controlled massive infections. As a prevention measurement, I think is fine.

Have a nice one.

1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?
Since bioethics is a branch of traditional ethics, it is important to listen to various points of view in order to make a critic analysis and make the right choice. Also in topics related to public society, individuals have the right to know information that might relate to them or affect them in one way or another to prevent misunderstood and false information.
2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?
I personally think it's not, it goes beyond making a greater good by hiding the truth, as human beings we have to seek the truth and not hiding it by any means.
3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?
I think it is, it's the only sustainable way to prevent more infections. To some degree, it is better to prevent millions of cases by isolating a much smaller group of people that could potentially infect a larger amount of people.

1. Transparency is very important for various reasons such as giving people all the information they need to survive a pandemic like this.
I think that overall the lack of transparency comes from the government (as always) attempting to have iron fist control over their population, this is wrong because it tramples on the priorities of keeping people alive and well for any monetary gain (hiding the virus to keep stores running).

2. It is not ethical to hide the information, the ones censoring the people who want to warn the masses about the virus are putting them at great risk of infection and potential death.

3. When we still do not understand how this illness spreads and works I'd say isolation is playing it safe, in this particular case I guess it is the best option until we find a reliable way to detect infection and contain it.

Hello there
1. When it comes to Bioethics this human rights play a serious roll for the society’s protection, freedom of expression is a tool for the people who want to collaborate to their community’s safety by publishing information of importance and the transparency of public institutions allows the citizens get informed of their community’s state in order to protect their families and themselves. The violation of this rights is equivalent to attempt to the people’s wellbeing.

2. No, usually this kind of information hiding does not exist with the purpose of protecting the population. We as persons need to be aware of the risks that we are currently exposed to so that we can take a decision in order to stay safe and look for our security.

3. Yes, it’s a contingency measure that doesn’t attempt significantly against people’s rights and actually turns to be effective at the time of preventing the population from infection and control the growth of the epidemic.
I hope you´re all having a nice day
Alan

Good day, everyone.
I hope you are having a great week.

In analogical terms, Coronavirus crisis reminds me of the book “Ensayo sobre la ceguera” [The blindness essay] by José Saramago. He talks about a blindness epidemy that conducts the government to imprison those people who have been infected or that have been in contact with infected people. The book shows a government unable to provide solutions to a global epidemy where everyone is getting blind. This chaotic situation leads to anarchy; a lack of public organization creates cities without electricity, energy and water services thus the streets begin to be the garbage and human feces dump. This book shows the discrepancies that may come when talking about organizing a society when disaster has come in global terms. It shows that without communication between government, social organizations and private and public sectors, the reaching of agreements is far from being fulfilled.

1. Democracy is built on the idea that a majority can express their opinion to reach agreements that benefit this majority of people. When governments appoint decision making to a very secluded group of people that do not have intercultural and interdisciplinary backgrounds and decision making is done to fulfill the minority interests, democracy is not being applied, thus bioethical issues are not being resolved.

2. I do not think it is justifiable to hide information. I believe that creating awareness on the population on potentials risks would lead to a better understanding of the situation thus protecting effectively the people surrounding, such as direct family. At the same time, informing the population on potential risks could create agreements between neighbors to protect the near area.

3. I believe that joining individuals that are not infected in a secluded place with already infected individuals is to violate the beneficence principle of the Belmont report whose purpose is to secure the people’s well-being. There might be cases of people in vulnerable conditions that favor the virus to infect and kill them, a situation that could be avoided if these people get isolated but in a separated place from the infected ones.

Let me know your comments about the topic.
Best regards,
Aracely Gutiérrez

Paloma Michelle Rubio Arteaga Hello everyone, this is my opinion about the questions, hope you have a great day. 1.	"A popular Government without popular information or the means of acquiring it is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own Governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives."James Madison, Letter to W. T. Barry, August 4, 1822I wanted to quote this phrase to answer the question of why transparency and freedom of expression are important, and its simple, because it gives you the power to decide, to act according to the situations and evaluate what according to your beliefs is the correct thing to do, and as a nation, as countries, and as the whole world the time to evaluate and act before a tragedy like it COVID-19 happens. 2. No, is not justifiable, Kant, one of the leading Western philosophers, believed that everyone has a strict duty, to tell the truth even if it might be harmful. He believed that lying could never be an excuse, as it was always harmful to a person or to mankind in general. In this case, hide Information is like a lie, because in the end, you’re not telling the whole truth, bioethical speaking is not justifiable, because people have the right to know so they can act according to it. 3. World health organization says “Social distancing measures can help to reduce transmission and enable health systems to cope. Handwashing and coughing into your elbow can reduce the risk for yourself and others. But on their own, they are not enough to extinguish this pandemic. It’s the combination that makes the difference. So, my response is that it totally justifies just because is one of the best ways to not get infected by a really violent and not yet controlled virus. T protect your own health and others.

Information is incredibly important at the time of making a decision be it medical, social, etc. so transparency and freedom of expression are needed in order to acquire relevant information and obtain an adequate understanding of the situation, this way we have a true chance of considering all of the possible options before making a decision and we can share and compare our position and understandings with other people.

2. No, because the population is left without information, hence, without a solid base to make the most appropriate decisions to protect their and other people’s health.

3. Yes, as it was said in one of the articles “in an epidemic without effective drugs or a vaccine, isolation and quarantine may be the only effective interventions” because a person that doesn´t show symptoms is not always free of the virus, he or she could be an asymptomatic carrier and limiting the human to human contact would also limit the spread of the virus. However, I think that in an ideal situation the isolation should be voluntary because in that case there are no rights being violated.

1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?

In order to act swiftly and effectively, it is imperative to make available any and all information.

2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?

I believe so, yes. It deos, however depend on the culture, severity of the health risk and population of possible infected. People are, in general, panicky creatures. This was shown quite eloquently when COVID-19 first broke out. We were told what precautions to take, and yet, people either didnt heed them or took them too far. They started buy toilet paper en masse, and spreading fear as well as misinformation. Those who ignored the warings are just as dangerous as those panicky masses that helped deprive resources to those in need. In cases such as these, discretion is more advisable, within reason. Worse case scenario, enforce martial law to force civil obediance. Seems like whats more dangerous to other than COVID, is other people panicking.

3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?

Of course! All dieases have incubation periods where the infected are asymptomatic. This does NOT mean the virus can't be spread, just that no symptoms are showing just yet. Until more information is discovered about the diesease, such as: how does it spread, how does it reproduce (replicate), what ARE the symptoms, etc, its best to assume a general area of affect depending on the time elapsed since first exposure and first symptoms shown to better control and prevent an outbreak.

1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?
Because both of them are essential to the development of any massive thought, the right of expressing an opinion publicly is basically the source of any mass idea, and the right to access information about important topics provides trustworthy information to the individuals who will later develop their critical opinions and feelings about this or that.
2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?
Yes, because of what I just stated in the paragraph before. One does not control how average individuals will react to certain information, which creates a breach of opportunity for misunderstandings to flourish and spread, that will later lead to chaos and massive panic.
3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?
Yes, specially because of the incubation time of the disease, which allows an apparently uninfected individual to spread the virus for up to 14 days before showing any symptoms himself.

Good evening colleagues, because I noticed that the majority were leaning towards the coronavirus issue, I decided to watch the documentary on Netflix about the problem of social networks. Honestly, what they share is not new or out of this world, it is something we all know but we decided to take for granted, how social networks are addictive and a form of manipulation of the masses. In one of the past exercises, some of us analyzed the bioethical problems within modern slavery in soccer, and I think without exception we all agreed that it was an abomination, and as I already mentioned, we decided to ignore the fact that social media is a form of human trafic, but bodies are not sold, people's minds are sold, an idea is implanted, and that idea that leads to another and so on, and we not only accept it, but we enjoy it and defend it. And throughout the tasks I have used the word dehumanize a few times, and this is because many of the bioethical problems are summed up in different ways in this, and social networks dehumanize us in order to see ourselves as merchandise.

1. The lack of transparency in times of crisis is a clear sign that bad things are happening. Transparency can help calm things down. If the decisions taken are not good, thanks to transparency, there will be pressure for the decisions to change.
That's why freedom of expression is vital. Had Dr. Li Wenliang's information been made known earlier and had it reached more people, COVID-19 would probably have been taken seriously long before.
2. It can be justified, but only in very particular cases. Trying to prevent the population from panicking quickly could be a good thing, for example, to avoid food shortages. However, this implies joint actions, dedicated to reducing the epidemic.
3. completely. there are two reasons for this:
Just because people appear not to be infected does not mean that they really are.
1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?.
Transparency is key for everyone to know what they are facing and how to protect and take care of themselves. As for freedom of expression is right everyone has as human beings.
2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?
No, because of the first answer, transparency is key for everyone and everything. Society needs to have access to delicate information; however, people should be given the opportunity to think by themselves and develop a critical consciousness of their own.
3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?
Of course, because of the 14 days that an apparently uninfected patient can spread the virus without developing any symptoms. It is required for the authorities to take precautions so that the virus won’t spread further.

Hello everyone!

1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?

Because being truthful with your surroundings leads to better results, knowing important information that others can use it to help each other is really appreciate, and it should not eliminate the freedom of the ones saying that information.

2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?

It is not, if it can harm the population, they should know it as fast as possible, but at the same time I can see why it can be justifiable. It can be justifiable because if you don’t have a lot of information or you are not completely sure about this information, it wont help the population and it would only lead to chaos, chaos that now can harm others.

3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?

From my perspective yes, even if you are not completely sure that you are infected, as simple as being in isolation (and of course with the help that you need) can help a lot to not contaminate other people.

Hope you are having an awesome week.

Hello my fellow classmates

1. Why are transparency and freedom of expression important for Bioethics?

I dont think is just important for Bioethics, it´s important for every aspect of our lives, freedom of speech is one of the most important human rights, for me, any kind of form of limitation to it, it´s contrary to what modernity and law defends.

Transparency it´s important because that way you can understand completely, if given the case, and thinking about bioethics, how a medical procedure works, how can you be affected by certain viruses and diseases, or how to treat them and it´s contrary effects.

2. Bioethically speaking, is it justifiable to hide information about potential health risks to the population?

I think it´s not, it maybe irresponsible to do it if the health risk is not really calculated and its effects are in reality more harmful or less than it is thought.

3. Can isolation of apparently uninfected people be justified when it happens in the same place as the infected Coronavirus individuals?

Of course it is, that way you prevent the possible spread of the disease. One has to take care of itself, but, it is important to take care of others.
