#4 Connecting the Dots

As I reflect back on the Jerrod Gets Racially Slurred video, I realized my perspective was shifting and becoming richer as I explored how race and culture played an important role in each character’s epistemology. I also had to reflect on my own and colleagues cultural positionalities that help to inform their analysis of the clip. While I did not respond to everyone’s post, I was able to reflect on everyone’s responses. Each response was informed by self, relationships to others, reflection and representation, and systems. I see value in utilizing this frame work to better interpret and represent people in research. It is my most humble hope that I leverage the voices of those who are living on the margins of margins. I have to be incredibly mindful of my critical racial and cultural competence and how this will enhance or impede my opportunities to share the most genuine narrative.

#3 Dangers in Education Research

I believe Milner utilized the title Danger in Education Research to create urgency around bias in research. Additionally, he provides a framework for processing and illuminating seemingly light, unintentional, unchecked marginalization that manifest across various sectors of society. Milner talks about color/culture blind research, policy and document analysis, and teacher education research. Addressing culture blind research can prevent exploitation and misrepresentation of individuals and communities of color (Milner, 2007, p. 392). This is something I will be very conscious of as I begin to conduct my own original research. I have been inspired by an academic named Dr. Ivory Toldson. He wrote a book titled No BS (Bad Stats): Black People Need People Who Believe in Black People Enough Not to Believe Every Bad Thing They Hear about Black People. I was able to connect many of the examples provided in the readings to Dr. Toldson’s effort to provide counter narratives about black achievement utilizing unbiased data analysis.

#2 Assumed Superiority and Inferiority

Have you ever heard this in talks about diversity and/or some variation: “Attending this workshop on diversity only attracts those who are really interested in the subject…it’s truly like preaching to the choir”. I don’t trust the premise behind preaching to the choir as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I appreciate how Milner references the importance of pursing deeper racial and cultural knowledge about oneself and the community we study. Tatum (2001) eloquently highlights how the positive identity development about oneself not based on assumed superiority or inferiority is a lifelong process and requires unlearning misinformation internalized by ourselves and others. This perspective helps me as a researcher to constantly reflect on my blind spots to accurately interpret and affirm experiences of all the partners of research.

#1 Shifting from Self to System

The framework of researcher racial and cultural positionality has expanded my lens for processing the seen, unseen, and unforeseen dangers for conducting research. I have gone on a cultural awareness raising journey that started during my later years of undergraduate and accelerated throughout my master’s educational experiences. I was unsatisfied with my exposure to racial, political, social, cultural, and historical education that was not grounded in understanding the complexities and nuances of my black identity. I continue to read about the contributions, legacies, triumphs of my heritage and have extended this beyond my cultural positionality. My early consciousness development was focused on the context of the individual level of my identity. As a critical researcher, I understand the importance of expanding my perspective in broader scale. Considering policy, institutional, systemic, and collective issues in addition to individual level of inquiry will give more breadth to my analysis (Milner, 2007).
