Critical theory lies within Lopez's research ; critical theory tends to critique historical and structural conditions of oppression and seeks to transform the conditions (Glesne p.10, 2016)

Critical theory is led by the historical realism ontology and it states that life is essentially a virtual reality that is shaped by social, political, cultural, economic, ethnic, and gender values crystallized over time. (Glesne p.10, 2016)

Lopez's research focuses on all of these aspects through the use of the race-gender paradigm as they all have an effect on the ways in which one might go through life and their views in regards to the attainment of social mobility.

Lopez used the race gender experience paradigm as well as the ethnicity paradigm in order to complete her research. She also had a personal connection to the research, as she was a second generation immigrant as well, and this helped her to connect with those involved in the study as well.

For quantitative data collection, Lopez provided a survey, but the qualitative data provided much more detail and context to the numerical information.

For qualitative data, Lopez conducted focus groups and life history interviews over a 2 year period, which were both recorded and transcribed, and also did a participant observation at Urban High School for 6 months.
