The first thing to starting a good argumentative essay is your thesis. The thesis is one sentence that explains (sums up) what you are going to talk about. For example: Dogs are better than cats. From this one sentence I know what the essay is going to be about without even reading any further into the essay.

After you state your thesis you can't just leave it at that because the reader is going to why dogs are better than cats. So you have to support your thesis. For example: Dogs are better than cats because they are more playful. This supports the thesis because it tells me why dogs are better than cats.

The Hook

The first thing to starting a good argumentative essay is your hook. The hook is usually the first sentence in your essay. Hooks grab your reader's attention. This is important because you want your reader to be interested in what you want to say. If want your reader to read your whole essay you have to have a good hook and continue to say interesting things throughout your essay. You can start your hook with a question, cool fact, story, quote, etc. For example: Did you know that the most popular dog breed is a Labrador Retriever? This works as a hook because it lets you know what you are going to be talking about in the essay, and it is an interesting fact.
